My basic rules:taz:
hi Soda and slmkhoo, can share what are some rules that u set ?
So far, I does not like my kids to hold to their phone 24x7hr.
They only allow to bring out for tuition.
Now this lady want to bring to school and also req for dataplan cos all or most her classmates has it. So I quickly check out if it is valid request.
- no checking during homework (ideally, should be on silent mode and out of sight)
- no checking during meals/when talking to (or being talked to by) family members
- checking only at min. 1 hr intervals, and no more than necessary (10 mins or so)
- no checking while walking on the roads
- must reserve time to read, talk to parents, watch TV etc.
My daughter brings her phone to school so that she can let me know if there are changes of schedule, or if she needs to while on the way there or back as she goes by public transport. I leave the school to control what she does in school. I have also spent a lot of time talking to her about how anti-social the constant checking is, how it wastes time, ruins eyesight, interrupts her activities etc, and she agrees. We haven't had any issues about phone use (yet). It is true that many girls have data plans, but it isn't a need. If they need to go online in school or at home, they have their Macs.
As for allowing 'freedom', I think they cannot be given too much at this age unless they have a lot of self-discipline. I think it's better to start out strict then gradually relax when they show they can manage on their own. Actually, for my daughter, I don't really articulate the rules anymore as she generally keeps within the boundaries. Once in a way, if I think she's getting too attached to her phone, I will say so and she will adjust.

Thanks soda for the response. Yes, my dd is in year 1, & that's exactly why I'm puzzled over this need for update as the numbers were given to the school just recently. If the update is for Yr 2 to Yr 4 pupils, that I can understand, as this has been a common practice in dd's Primary school too, requesting for update from P2 to P6 pupils, usually at the beginning of each year.25hr mama:
Hi all, just like to check whether anyone of u received call from the school regarding update of parents mobile numbers? I just did, but feeling a bit puzzled & apprehensive why the school need to do this, it's just the beginning of the school year, and all these information had just been given to them when filling up all the required forms recently. Actually I'm worried could this be a fraud or something.... Am I over paranoid?!
No call from school. Is it only for yr 1s?
The school does SMSs to parents sometimes. Usually, its about some important messages or when your dd is absent.
When I received the call, my heart pumped so fast when the caller told me it's from RGS, as it is Yr 1 Camp Day in school, I was worried whether could it be that my dd is unwell or has had a fall or something. When I was told its abt update of mobile numbers, was a bit apprehensive. Actually thought of asking the caller whether she has our numbers on hand since all these info. has been given earlier to the school, and felt like requesting for her to read the numbers to me instead for confirmation. But finally I just gave my numbers to her, as I thought she may find it offensive.
Perhaps, other Yr 1 parents here can share, whether u received call from RGS too? -
Hi 25 hr mama, I've not received any calls from Rgs.
Do you want to call Rgs to clear your doubts instead?25hr mama:

Hi 25hr mama. I am a Y1 mom and I have not received any call from the school to confirm/ update our numbers. The school has sent something like 2 text messages to us recently. One was regarding the apparel for first day of school. Did you receive that message? Maybe they noted that their messages could not get through to your number? You could call the office to check if they are doing such updates or since Y1 parents are going to school for the concert today, you could drop by the office and just check so you have some peace of mind.

Thanks Havana & kira for the reply. Will do just that, since I’ll be going to the school this evening.

Hi,
I am parent of Y1 girl, I didn’t receive any call from RGS. -
Hi all, am in RGS now. Juz checked wif the General Office staff, they confirmed that they did made the call, & that they hv assigned 6 staff to do this calling & update, & it's from Yr 1 to Yr 4. So everyone will receive this call one of these days if u have not heard from them.

Seems so labour-intensive. Isn't there a way of updating on iNet? They should ask parents to do that first then call the ones who didn't. -

I was just exploring the parent iNET and saw that we could also update all parent and student particular there. Done it.25hr mama:
