Went for PTM yesterday, looks like it's going to be a hectic year ahead. Talk about the new English Syllabus. Told myself to take it one day at a time. Remedial classes for MT as already started! thank god DD don't have to attend. However from term 2 supplementary classes will begin twice a week. She already as CCA twice a week. So in future she as to stay back 4 times a week.

Then in June there is Taiwan trip for a week, organized by the MT class.

Isn't it a bit too much for a 11 yrs old. I am thinking of not allowing her to attend one of the supp classes. Is it possible if I write to the teacher stating that I am not in favor????

It's better not to. They may touch on certain stuff for exams.

My DD's school - they cover compo and Onsponge Maths during supplementary classes. If u r confident that you can manage well without supplementary classes, go ahead.

Parents can always decide if their child should attend or not. Of course, some schools and teachers may not like it. Perhaps you can find out what will be covered during supp classes and then decide? You can let the teacher know that you feel that the time commitment is too great for your child and that you will undertake to cover the material at home.

If you give him other work to do, does it take up all his free time? If you occupy all his free time anyway, there will be no incentive for him to do more. And does he need extra assignments? If he can see that finishing fast will gain him some free time, then he is more likely to do that.

At times I wonder whether this supplementary classes are really necessary.

From what I see and heard the child who does frequently well in their exams (band 1 or 2) still have to go for supp classes together with the students who does not do well in their exams. Isn’t it could be better if the teachers can put their resources to teach the weaker ones, with smaller class size ( attention by the teachers) could be better, then focusing with a class of 40 students.
Also the students who have external tuition should be exempted from supp classes, to make way for students who could not afford external help, in this way the weaker ones could catch up with the brighter ones.
It’s just my thoughts, what do you think?

My DS has a play schedule - 5pm to 630pm he goes down to play with his friends. But my agreement with him is he has to finish his school homework and my work before he gets to go down. And when he drags his feet, I just remind him that it just cuts into his play time. Works most times so far.

                    Reporting in here too...

DD did not have a lot of homework from P1 - 4. Then suddenly she has lots of homework everyday now. She's learning to work fast to finish her school work πŸ˜‚ but still drags her feet on mommy work :stompfeet:

School is starting supp classes soon too - kinda 'compulsory' as they do not ask for parent's consent for child to join, and just state that parents need to write in if child not attending. I'm thinking of not sending DD for one of the days as she is already not listening to teacher during normal class time. But teacher already stated she will only teach compo during the supp class so in a dilemma :?

If you can afford time, send to the supp classes. She may teach situational writing as well. This part is new to our kids.

Hello everybody, happy to find this thread. I have a goatie too! She loves to sleep, she loves to be cuddled. I wonder if yours too? Aside. I am aware that there is a change in English syllabus for this cohort, but not sure of the details. I'm thinking of buying P4 2013 Top Schools English exam papers instead of P5 2013 Top Schools English exam papers for her to practise this year cos P5 2013 will still be the old syllabus, right? Do you think this is a bright idea?

I thought was only my goatie.... my goatie loves to sleep too!!!! Since newborn.... he can sleep and sleep and wake up every only 5-6 hours for milk feed. Until now.... sometimes he comes back from school, he wants afternoon nap... :skeptical:
i wouldn't think of buying P4 exam papers though. I will buy P5. As far as I understand from the tutors... seems not a big change.

My DD is also like yours, loves to sleep and sleeps very long, 12 hrs per day during the holiday. Notice she has been spending longer time to do her homework since school starts, so automatically her nap time is gone. Together with the high demands from school CCA activities, supplementary classes, SYF and other competitions training. Don't think we can squeeze any of her time for any tuitions.
