Follow-on question: I just found out that one SEAB-approved model costs over $200 at Popular! And there is only one model there. Are there cheaper places to get these? Does the JC order for the students (and get a better price)? Thanks!

most people are using TI 84 plus or TI 84 plus Silver Edition or TI 84 Plus Pocket SE.

even the textbook and guides at popular are based on TI 84 plus.

Two H2 maths guides that shows how to use TI 84 plus.

Thanks. That seems to be most common. Why is it so expensive!

Oh, that's a good price! It's now about $220 in Popular. When did she get it? Any idea where they got it from?

                    whitecorp:
Either the TI-84 or TI-84 plus would suffice. You don't need the Silver Edition.

In fact, I make my students steer clear of the GC most of the times unless they are working on statistics related problems. I insist they use their brains to graph out stuff and perform mental calculations (which can in fact be quicker than the person who needs to spend time keying in the commands).

The GC is not a toy, and I have been disturbed by youngsters' over-reliance on computing machines for the longest time. You may refer to this personal reflection piece I wrote quite a while ago:

                    http://www.whitegroupmaths.com/2010/01/ ... lator.html

You can use the GC, but don't over-use it. Peace.
Thanks for the advice, I totally agree! I think that the syllabus should avoid calculator use and focus more on actual understanding.

Actually, it's my husband who wants one as he's been asked to tutor a friend's son. He has not used this kind of calculator (not used in our day), so needs to get some practice! My daughter only starts school next week, so it could take a while before the orders go in (assuming the school will order in bulk). I found the name of the agent for TI in Singapore and will call them later if they are open today.
