Recommendations for graphing calculators
-
slmkhoo:
Which graphing calculator is most widely recommended by Maths teachers for H1/H2 Maths? Any personal recommendations? Thanks!
Fyi, my gal's sch is using TI-84 plus pocket SE... -
Thanks. That seems to be most common. Why is it so expensive!

Oh, that's a good price! It's now about $220 in Popular. When did she get it? Any idea where they got it from?slmkhoo:

Thanks for the advice, I totally agree! I think that the syllabus should avoid calculator use and focus more on actual understanding.Either the TI-84 or TI-84 plus would suffice. You don't need the Silver Edition.
In fact, I make my students steer clear of the GC most of the times unless they are working on statistics related problems. I insist they use their brains to graph out stuff and perform mental calculations (which can in fact be quicker than the person who needs to spend time keying in the commands).
The GC is not a toy, and I have been disturbed by youngsters' over-reliance on computing machines for the longest time. You may refer to this personal reflection piece I wrote quite a while ago:

You can use the GC, but don't over-use it. Peace. -

Sorri, no idea who is the supplier as it is a class mass order....
Yr DD's sch doesnt order for them ? -
Augmum:
Actually, it's my husband who wants one as he's been asked to tutor a friend's son. He has not used this kind of calculator (not used in our day), so needs to get some practice! My daughter only starts school next week, so it could take a while before the orders go in (assuming the school will order in bulk). I found the name of the agent for TI in Singapore and will call them later if they are open today. She juz got it recently when sch reopens...

TI @ Bras Basah sells TI 84 Plus Pocket SE (most JC students are using this model) cheaper than Popular.
