All About Autism

Sadly no play dates or cousins for him, in the past we thought of having another child so that he can have a playmate… however we are really exhausted with just 1. He do not really like crowded noisy area and he sometimes shut down himself to focus, due to his sensory overload. However he still can behave n perform academically well in kindergarten, just that he do not like to learn or speak chinese. Still years behind others in socializing and speaking with others. We gave lots of love and caring for our kid and see improvements little steps by steps and that is really touching to us. Lately he begin to improve his toilet training skill by sitting on the potty. Its not easy, but we take it as a challenge.

Hi Optrex80,
How old is your son? If around 4.5 years old onwards, I think he can attend social class. A more expensive method is to hire a shadow teacher to help him improve his social skill/interaction with his classmates in his kindergarten? Does he attend OT? Some OT centre does partnering and where 2/4 kids ‘play’ together under the OT’s supervision.
Like Mashy, my son’s best playmate is his older sister. Every night he will follow her around in the bedroom and imitate her actions, because they are only 1.5 years of age apart, so their antics are quite wild and my bed is becoming a ‘disaster’ with all the jumping! But heck, I treat it as free OT session!
In case you all are wondering, hmm?? Your 27 months old son can follow his sister and imitate her actions and he is considered autistic??? I posed the same question to the developmental PD and she said home/school is considered ‘comfort zones’ so not counted!!! Btw, my son also dont’t have repetitive behaviors or limited interest as well. Damn am I puzzled too but nevermind, I just focused on helping my son in his weakness and celebrate his milestones. -
Hi Mashy,
You are so spot-on! I also intend to drop the SLT that focus on functional speech as I realize there are cheaper alternatives for that like home-based sped teacher. But since DS just started ‘talking’, I will monitor a few more months then decide. Thanks for your advice! -
There is a place where those who do not walk the journey will not and cannot reach. A place that is full of thorns, but where roses bloom too. A place that can be quite lonely, but that can also be filled with joy.

sigh… but sometimes, it gets so prickly and thorny that leaves a painful experience.

What does SLT stand for?

tabgha, I agree. Sometimes it can be so painful that I dont know how to pick myself up.
But life is a cycle. Things will come to pass. Where there are bad times, there will also be good times. -
Wassant,
SLT stands for speech and language therapy, OT stands for occupational therapy. -
Hi ImMeeMee,
Yes, very painful and lonely journey, I am at the brink of collapse but need to hang on past the winter cold to see the flowers blossom in spring! -
