2014 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

Just sharing my thoughts. Last year my daughter sat for psle and did well. She had tuition for all subjects but she was an also an independent and motivated learner. However when we realised that psle was easier than thought, I personally felt as we have overcompensated ie. too many tuition. This year my son taking psle. School has supplementary lessons and known for really stretching them. He has tuition too but I can see he is getting stressed and tired because of homework from both school and tuition. I will be stopping tuition then. I have two other children taking psle in few years time. IMHO, every child is different and I will take a different approach for each child. No point pushing them and end up getting adverse results. As parents, we cannot help much academically but just be beside them during this journey and lend moral support and observe on the quiet. Make changes if something is not right..they are after all, our children. :grphug:

Thanks for sharing, I am also thinking to withdraw my dd from tuitions. think and think...still thinking
if stop all, I will worry if make a wrong decision :sad: ....scared what if her PSLE result out and...:lightrod: ... by then maybe I will regret why i stop all tuitions. :stupid:

Undertake the decision to withdraw your child from tuition after a discussion with your child. The discussion should include your child’s undertaking to better manage his own revision once tuition is cancelled.
Do it with the understanding and conviction that it is the best you want for your child. There is no need to feel guilty, and don’t let the "what ifs or if onlys" bogged you down. -
So many hard decisions for the parents of the PSLE cohort.
We must remind ourselves not to beat ourselves up about our decisions should the desired outcome not be achieved. We are only human and there are many factors at play during PSLE.
At the end of the day, there is no such thing as a perfect decision. So I guess if we keep our child's mental and physical wellbeing as our priority, we should be making relatively sound decisions

tuition is only good when the child can learn from it, if the sch work is already overloaded then tuition may be a burden… anyway i’m just sharing my own experience here of my P6 dd current situation…

Started dd1 on Chinese tuition of compo writing n compre beginning of this term. Pulling her out when term ends. I think I rather her spending her Sunday afternoons relaxing at home or outing with family or with me going thru her queries...
After looking through her school's work so far, have decided to give up on hcl. Yes, still all busy with the mountain load of hw and what-nots. Haven't done any revision yet and CA1 is 1st week of March :scared: :nailbite:

Same ... we rejected some classes recommended by the school as well. Teacher was puzzled, but my child replied, \"My mother said no need.\"

She is still into non-academic activites, alot of hours in fact, but she is happy so we let her be. I guess these activities keep her balanced. -
I guess each child is different and the load from different schools differ as well.
DS - PSLE 2012
He was pretty relaxed, even at P6, he would go to bed earlier than the younger sister in P5. He was still having 2-3 CCAs till ~May as well. DS started chinese tuition in P2/P3 (cannot remember) and added the other 3 subjects in P5. Accepted DSA (2nd choice) and did better than expected. Maybe he could have done better if we pushed more, but overall still satisfactory & perhaps a blessing in disguise. If DS went in another school with his PSLE score, I think he will be struggling with HCL now.
DD - PSLE 2013
Started having heavy schoolwork from P5. Similar to the elder bro, tuition for all (start with Chinese, added the other 3 in upper pri).
In P6, we felt that she was overwhelmed with schoolwork & needed more rest. She was harder on herself and to avoid any burnt-out or over-stressed, we stopped Math & Sci tuition by end Apr....something we took a bet on. Her PSLE was a good decent score (similar to the elder bro), but was off her track record in school, she did below expectation. Despite continuing her Eng tuition, this was the only subject she didn't obtain an A*.
Eventually she managed to get into her dream school......while I do not know what's the outcome, but she's happy. The lesson/takeaway - do not be complacent and take things for granted. Even when something looks absolutely within reach, always be prepared for that 1% of uncertainty (which my dd proved to us )
For DD, we knew she had put in the effort and worked for her goal......even tho she missed her target, in our heart we recognized her effort and to us, she has achieved her target. So she is now happily using the iPhone, the reward promised to her.
Honestly, there are sooooo many factors that can affect a child's performance....natural ability, diligence, character (carelessness, untidiness, attitude etc).....I guess we just have to try and see what's the best for the child. -
To tuition or not to tuition? That is the question.
I'm a FTWM, so tuition is something like me compensating for not being there to revise my DD3's work with her, and making sure she follows-up on her revision. My DD3 is definitely not an independent learner, she needs to be prodded, scolded, shouted at and threatened before she picks up her books. Also, I'm totally hopeless in Science, and feel helpless when my DD3 turn to me for help. So tuition is totally necessary for her, otherwise she will put in the bare minimum to get just her daily schoolwork done.
At the end of the day, the tuition must add value to the child's education. The tutor must give that something extra to the child that the teacher is not able to give. One is of course the individualised attention, another is learning customised to the child's style and ability, another could be extra notes (especially for Science) that will help score in tests and exams, and yet another could be just to give encouragement and motivation.
But I'm not obsessed over tuition. I hv 2 older kids and I only started them on tuition when the oldest was in P5 mainly for Math. In secondary school, they had no tuition except for MT last year, which I stop this year coz they hated it (even though the tuition helped pull up their scores). This year, because my DD1 is taking O levels, I gave in and let her have tuition because she wanted it. Again for Math, and Physics & Chem. Same thing with my DD2 in S3, she also wanted help in E Math (nearly failed last year but mainly because of her CCA).
Tuition is not necessary if exams are not part of the child's life, especially one as crucial as PSLE. But that's not possible, is it? So unless we're satisfied with our child just coasting by with a B or C average (which is still ok, but we wouldn't be kiasu parents in that case, would we
