All About Finding & Evaluating Tutors

Just to get some advise.


I have a math tutor who is very friendly and good. After teaching my son for one year. My son result SA1 was 30, and SA2 46.5. There is improvement but still fail.

1. Should I find another new tutor

2. continue with this tutor for once a week and find another math tutor for once a week also.

If two different tutors to teach math. Are there any issues?

Hi, I have a mum who have quite similar experience this year. She has a sec4 daughter who have been consistently failing in Physics tests and exams in her school. The mum has hired quite a number of Physics tutors for her. the first Physics tutor taught her at beginning of this year and after 3 months of tuition her daughter still failed in her school test. Immediately the mum terminate the tutor service and get another Physics tutor, who is an ex-MOE teacher. Then after 2-3 months the daughter had her SA1 and failed again. So the mum terminate the tuition service. She hired another tutor and this time is a small group tuition at the tutor's house. The daughter also got her friend to join the tuition. While the daughter finds the tuition quite ok, her friend feedback to her mum the tuition is not good. So the mum started to look for another tutor.
Then came August when she heard about me from her friend and engaged my tuition service. Believing her friend recommendation and her daughter's friend's feedback about the 3rd tutor, she terminate the 3rd tutor service and got me to help her daughter.
I have only less than 2 months to work on her Physics before her school prelim exams. If she failed again, I am quite sure I will be sacked too like the other tutors. We had 6 lessons within the 2 months. I gave her crash courses and practicing challenging questions on all 22 topics. She put in lots of effort herself doing the many worksheets, other school prelim papers and assessment books etc I told her to do, and during tuitions I will go through those questions she got wrong or don't know how to do.
I do see remarkable improvement in her physics skills based on the practices she did and I have the confidence that she is not only going to pass but will score distinction. So I told the mum just before the prelim exam that if her daughter did not get A1, I will refund her the fee for 2 lessons. and if she get less than A2, I will refund her 4 lessons fee. The mum rejected this idea but I insisted. In the end, the daughter got A2, and of course the mum rejected my giving back of the 2 lessons fee.

So what I am advising is you may want to consider changing tutor now, but get only from recommendations from your friends or relatives, or someone who have strong track records.

Do you all typically conduct face to face interview of the tutor before hiring him/her?


How about asking for a trial lesson to see your DC click with tutor or not?

A phone interview would probably be more practical than meeting up. In my instance, I would definitely encourage parents to let their child have a trial lesson with me before deciding. After all, one can always toot his horns extremely loud and claim he is a darn excellent specimen of a tutor (words are plain cheap), yet underperform during actual coaching sessions.

Yes, a tele- interview would be more practical as arrangements for meet-up is difficult due to different schedule between tutors and parents.

During a tele- interview, parents can find out more about the tutor, ask about how the lessons are conducted and get all his or her concerns / questions addressed.

I welcome parents who are unsure of my 1 to 1 tutoring service to have a trial lesson as I can understand their valid concerns. If for whatever reason/s, parents do not wish to continue with the tuition, they just pay for 1 lesson, no other hidden cost. Since I am not doing group tuitions, so sorry that I cant provide a free trial lesson.

it’s really hard to assess a tutor…whether he/she can deliver and parents’ involvement.

Actually sometimes this kind of things cannot control one. The same tutor taught my boy and my friend's daughter and my boy grades like improve a bit only but my friends daughter get A. They both P5 going P6 next year. Maybe coz my friend's daughter had tuition for a longer time but my point is this kind of thing hard to control.

Sometimes it also depends on the child's aptitude. Or even the actual day's performance. My husband taught a girl and his own daughter Maths together and perhaps his own daughter even more since he saw her every day. In the end, the other girl got A* and his own daughter got A.

before my son’s psle, hubby refused to believe that tutors can do a better job than parents coaching kids themselves. it could be that an outsider can exercise different approach or even how to exert which we parents can’t. many factors involved. hubby can’t coach younger one for math…so started her on tuition last year…we started seeing a positive approach and improvement this year.

Odd timing due to she doesnt work in the morning of 9-10.30am Mon to Wed so she can only teach Pri 1 & 2 (afternoon session students).

She is very good! Was recommended to me and my girl Pri 6 has been with her for 1 yr.
