MommyDearest:

Maybe I should clarify that the reason why I posed my question to check with both parents and ex/current jc students about the need for tuition is because my DS seems very relaxed in JC. CCA & PW have not started yet. He stays back after school to mingle with friends or attend talks (accdg to him) then come home just in time dinner. Work less than 2hrs then bedtime. Weekends can go out with friends from lunch till dinner.

This sort of like is non-existent in his Sec3-4 when he worked so hard for his O levels.

So I don't believe JC is such a breeze (easier than upper sec) and the fact that from earlier parents' conversation here, the JC kids are already working hard with some having started on PW already.

MommyDearest,

The JCs are just starting to ramp up to 3/4 speed (not even full speed yet). It's not surprising that your son doesn't feel as busy as he did for O levels. Most J1s are only into their first month in school. But the homework is starting to come in and I can foresee the students getting busier and busier, with lots of CCA and other enrichment activities coming on stream. I believe students in DHS and RVH, who started school in January and are in full steam now, would beg to differ that JC life is easier than upper sec. They're probably inundated with tests and homework by now.
Yes, i certainly beg to differ.....
JC life can NEVER be less busy than secondary3/4 life....
H2 subjs content are so much more in depth n heavy as compared to sec sch subjs...
Besides, some subjs are totally new to the pupils ... eg, Econs
And they hv only 2 yrs to cramp everything in....

In DHS, serious lessons are aldry started back in Jan...
after having few days of fun of orientation ( since they do not hv to wait for JAE pupils to join them)...
Mini tests n Lecture tests are on- going now...
Booklets of notes n emails of reading articles are being forwarded to pupils non- stop....
But if pupils choose not to read up, do some self- study ...
then i suppose they can certainly hv more free time...
It all boil down to own initiative...
jtoh:
Are there JCs which have started PW? I don't think they have at my dd's JC.
PW started in other JCs ?
What i know fr gal's sch is that PW Question was out...
But the lecturers cannot reveal to the pupils yet....
They were told that they'll know of their team members only after March holiday...

Textbook for lit would have full story & you can write your own take from full stroy as against 'Notes' would restrict you to focus on what is provided in .

Similarly For ELL, you would have your own interpretation of POEM!

I see what you mean. I agree! I also feel that students should read more widely before narrowing down to notes. I also believe that the act of making notes for herself is half the learning process, and that other notes are just a supplement. I hope teachers will assign reading from textbooks available in the library even if they don't require the students to buy the textbooks (they can be expensive).

Yap. Your original post had mentioned about borrowing books from library... Buy or borrow students should go back to source of notes. I guess compared to seconday edu , short span of JC program warrants such measures(Notes over books) ... that explains evolution of IP 😄

Already, at this stage, they hardly have any textbooks! But they are given readings (often online) to read up for themselves which are pretty much like textbook stuff. It piles up if they are not tackled regularly, and since teachers don't monitor closely, it can be easy to let things slide and just rely on the summary notes when closer to exams. Not sure what it will be like in Yrs 5&6, but based on what I read here, I guess it will be the same as all JCs where reading the background stuff is up to the student. At best, teachers may recommend some, but it's up to the student to be more pro-active.

I am more concerned about my older girl who is starting her A level programme now as she is not pro-active. I'm still waiting to see how much reading her teachers will require, and I will get her some books if I think necessary.

Hi5 Augmum

I showed dd this thread n she said the same thing - JC life can never be less busy than sec 3/4 life.

On to another topic - for those taking 4 H2 subjects, will you plan to drop one to H1 or die die still hang on to 4 H2 subjects. DD says that those who do 3H2 + 1H1 tend to do better in A levels.

She is now struggling with 4 H2 subjects n may consider dropping one to H1.

DS JC2 now. For his entire class and among his friends, no one dropped to 3 H2. Some took up additional H3 paper in JC2.

In gal's J1 class, alrdy there are pupils who take up 4 H2 plus 1 H1....
There are bound to hv pupils taking H3 subj comes next yr since hers being one of the Top classes...

Zbear,
Oh yr dd intends to drop to 3 H2? U mean now or wait till end of the yr?
Which subj she wanna to drop ?
For subj like econs, heard fr their T that it is not \" worth\" to drop to H1...
as scope n content is abt the same as H2 if u compare to other H1 Subjs which are usually Half the content of H2...

Has she talk to her FT yet ?

Also, it depends on what are the courses she wanna to read in Uni as some of these courses do require certain H2 subj as prerequisite ....(i think u know abt it)...
Anyone here knows when the PW result be out ?

I think it is together with A Level results. Early March.

This is what my dd told me too.

She will be taking her PW paper this year so her results will be out with next year's A level results.
PW results will not be released together with A level results. It is usually released in April, I think.

Augmum, seriously, I don't understand my DD. One minute she tells me she wants to drop one subject to H1 (when she is so frustrated with her studies) n today, she tells me she wants to take up 1 H3 subject (when she is in a good mood).

Since its only the 3rd month of JC1, I guess we have to wait n see what is her level of coping with her studies n where her strengths n weaknesses lie in.

:slapshead:

zbear, could it be that there’s a subject she really doesn’t like or can’t cope with so wants to drop that subject to H1. And there’s another subject she’s very good at and wants to take at H3?
