      Leo and Tom are given some money each. If Leo and Tom spend $50 and $25 respectively, Leo still have $600 when Tom has spent all his money. If they spend $25 and $50 each day respectively, Leo will still have $1800 when Tom has spent all his money. How much money is given to Leo.

      Hi Underthesea,

      My solution is the same as BigDevil. Have added explanation in my working. Hope it helps!

      Cheers,

      Hi BigDevil,

      Thank you! I am able to follow the steps except the last part. Why do we use 1 unit of Leo in the 2nd scenario and not the 2 units of Leo in the 1st scenario ? ie in the final step, we take 1800 + 400 = 2200 and not (2 x 400) + 600 = 1400 ? :?

      Thank you.[/quote]You could jolly well have. Just that in scenario 1, Leo spent 4 units rather than 2. So it should be (4 x 400) + 600 = $2200. Why it is chosen to use scenario 2 is because it is a simple addition of (1800 + 400), rather than having to multiply in scenario 1, and thus introducing additional chance of making mistakes.

        2) Kylie and Julie had an equal amount of money. Each day, Kylie spent $6 and Julie spent $10. When Julie had $18 left, Kylie had 3 times as much money left as Julie. How much money did each of them have at first ?

        3) Peter, James and Ron shared to buy a box of chocolates. Peter paid 2/7 the total amount paid by James and Ron. Peter paid 3/4 the amount Ron paid. If Ron paid $8 more than Peter, how much money did James pay for the chocolates ?

        Thank you very much !!
        Hi YLH88,

        2) Kylie and Julie had an equal amount of money. Each day, Kylie spent $6 and Julie spent $10. When Julie had $18 left, Kylie had 3 times as much money left as Julie. How much money did each of them have at first ?

        Each day Julie spents ($10 - $6 = $4) more than Kylie.

        When Julie has $18 left; Kylie has $54 left (3 x $18 ). At this point of time, Kylie has $36 more than Julie.

        No. of days taken = $36/$4 = 9 days. (If Kylie spends $4 less than Julie every day; they will take 9 days for Kylie to have $36 more than Julie)

        Amount of money they had at first
        Kylie : $ 54 + 9x $6 = $108
        Julie : $ 18 + 9 x $10 = $108

        3) Peter, James and Ron shared to buy a box of chocolates. Peter paid 2/7 the total amount paid by James and Ron. Peter paid 3/4 the amount Ron paid. If Ron paid $8 more than Peter, how much money did James pay for the chocolates ?

        Peter : Ron = 3:4
        Peter : Ron & James = 2:7

        Peter : Ron : James = 6: 8 : (21-8 ) = 6:8:13

        8u – 6u = $8
        2u = $8
        1u = $4

        James paid = 13u = 13 x $4 = $52

          Hi Dharma,

          Thank you very much.

          For qn 3, how do you get Peter : Ron : James = 6: 8 : (21-8 ) = 6:8:13 ?

              Peter : Ron & James = 2 : 7 = 6 : 21

              So, Peter : Ron : James = 6 : 8 : 13 (James portion is 21 – 8 = 13)

                      I’ve a question :

                      The cost of 2 soccer balls and 3 basketballs is $190. The cost of 3 soccer balls and 4 basketballs is $265. What is the cost of 1 basketball and 1 soccer ball respectively?
