How should i put it? No your concerns are not valid and it is also very valid becUse I believe the problem is not with the school or people she is with, it is with her own insecurities and her discomfort in being herself.

As a mother to 5 Children I don’t have to battle with this so far. My kids even in their teens do not Ask for or want anything branded want to watch this movie or that, or anything their friends have. I only give then what they need not what they want or what their friends have. Sometimes it means they have more sometimes it means they have to do without.

I have seen kids comparing and insisting parents buy this or make that for them because their friends have them. That is the perfect opportunity to teach them precous values rather than go buy that
thing. Learning to love what you have and be comfortable with oneself is the greatest gift to the child.

My boys and girls all go to schools where who’s who attend yet I do not see them unhappy not being able to keep up with the jonases.

No matter which school she goes to, she will find people having more than her at one point in time or another . Unless the child changes she will never be happy . You can never chane the world but you can change yourself. Choose go be happy with or without.

              cyberpie:
Thanks for all the info about fees and $$ issues.

Actually, i am concerned if there is elitism in indept schs like scgs.

My daughter is the type susceptible to peer influence ... so if her friends have seen that movie, she would want to see ... if her friends have gone to Disneyland, she would probably ask why we don't take her there ...

I am not saying other schs will be free from such problems but perhaps if i put her in a neighbourhood sch, such issues may be less?

I may be wrong and things may have changed ... but just putting my thoughts down here ... are my worries are justified? Like any other parent I want my daughter to be happy, but if I have to constantly battle such issues with her (which I am already doing now to some extent), then i really need to reconsider.
Don't worry about it, deal with it as you go along.

Bottom line is, it is a good school, not many has the opportunity to go there. So, if your girl qualify to go there, grab it, you'll never regret, it is a good & well established school.

Remember this post 4 years from now you will thank me for listening to me for sending her there !! 😄

It is indeed a very good school.

The school does provide a more holistic learning environment for the pupils.

Thanks for your advice and reassurances … I guess we are all social creatures and to compare (whether upwards or downwards) is natural.

Maybe the fact is I was a "victim" of this comparision thing in school myself, although I never bothered my parents as my family comes from a humble background. It does feel lousy when after sch hols your classmates came back with stories of their wonderful overseas vacation and all you did the entire sch hols was work at McDs. In a way, elite schs tend to have more of such well-to-do classmates (and sometimes they are loud and brag about it too!)

I keep this humble attitude all this while with my kids, but sometimes, as I say, it is a battle that I would like to avoid …

Then again, the positives of sending her to SCGS far outweigh this inconsequential \"little negatives\".

Not many has the chance to go there ... Remember when your girl is in SCGS, she will change \"from a face in the crowd to the one the crowd faces !!\"

I will repeat again that you will be thanking me 4 years from now for listening to me to send her to SCGS.

Remember this post, ok ? 😉

Just a fact. Yesterday, when I asked my Sec 1 daughter about this ostentatious tendency in SCGS, my daughter told me some girls are really show off. She overheard one girl saying, "That’s my father’s ferrari." Another said, "That’s my father’s lambo (I don’t know how to spell lah)" Then they started comparing.

My daughter said, "Wu liao lor, what’s the big deal? I just continue doing what I am doing. Expensive car only ma… Wu liao." She then went on to do what she was doing.

There are always such people in every school, one of her team mates from PLMGS is also like that, always boasting about her iPhone. Those from CGS also have a handful who like to boast, needless to say, there are also MGS girls who like to compare. Don’t mention RGS and NYHS, Dunman etc. So, where should we send our daughters?

School starts at home, I feel.

Reiterate what Vito says, SCGS is as good as it can get for my daughters so I’ll teach them to be sieves and not sponges. Absorb the good and sieve out the bad.
