Those courses are available in SST.
I wonder if SOTA also has avenues for learning video programming and film, movie making...animation.. all this is also part of visual arts or are they only drawing, painting and sculpturing, the traditional art forms ? :
Only that they offer only a 4-year course instead of 6years.

Sorry what is SST? How much is the fees ? Does it mean can join in Secondary 3 and study till PreU 2 so A level is conducted there? Then must quit SOTA after sec 2 ? :?
Another question: Is is necessary for my dd to attend formal art enrichment classes outside sch if she wants to audition for SOTA? The art portfolio that has to be presented, does it has to be professionally done? Does DIYs art folio done at home holds any weight?
A friend's daughter auditioned for Visual Arts, is now in 2010's Year 1 and prior to SOTA, did not have formal art classes outside of school. Her submissions included a few pieces of anime drawings, the rest were paintings done during art class in school, and one other painting which had been entered for a CC competition.
At the auditions, I did see some kids with sculptures and some had very good art work but I am not sure if they were the majority or minority.
Do you live in the East ? The Changkat CC (Tampines St 11) has excellent pottery facilities, a fully equipped studio and reasonably priced kids classes. The work they do for the kids classes is surprisingly good !
Please, please don't force your child to take any art or craft classes solely for the aim of a fuller portfolio. I teach scrapbooking and a few times I've had parents who've insisted their kids take the class hoping to add the work to portfolios. The kids were miserable, quite lost because it was a completely new medium which cannot be taught in one class sitting, it was totally unsuited to 12 year olds, at the end they produced work that was dismal ..... and everything cost a bomb. -

Dear Lock,
Another question: Is is necessary for my dd to attend formal art enrichment classes outside sch if she wants to audition for SOTA? The art portfolio that has to be presented, does it has to be professionally done? Does DIYs art folio done at home holds any weight?
Have you gone to Sota's website , clicked under \"Admission\" and then proceed to \"Preparation for the Audition in Visual Arts\"?
You would gain information of the profile of a Visual Arts student SOTA is looking for and all that technical preparations bit for the portfolio.
There's this paragraph on \"We pay attention to imaginative, innocent..\" that might help you in your preparation of a home art folioto. Another thing you might want to take note of is that works submitted must be recent (\"last 3 years' of work\")
It's anyone's guess what the panel of judges want and what that 'intangible' is..but hey, if the child wants to be a famous painter, there's nothing to stop her from being well prepared for the audition.

Thanks for the advice. My dd prefers to learn art through self-help books at her own time than to attend art enrichment classes.
The reason is she hardly has much time left to do her own stuff after having to stay back in sch for CCA, supplementary and enrichment classes 4x a wk plus tons of homework. She told me she would rather use the traveling time to relax and do more stuff at home
Another reason she told me is that she didnt want to incur extra burden for Daddy (i am a SAHM) as she knows the art enrichment classes are quite expensive.
I must say my dd is quite mature for her age.

Dear Lock,
It’s fantastic u share such a close bond with your daughter…( i can’t find an emoticon to express how I feel about this!grin)
I guess it’s a heartwarming feeling… -
THANK YOU phankao and ooptimizer. :snuggles:
Yes, went to website. SST seems more for kids who are into Math and Science than art. No sign of English Literature but I read somewhere in SOTA website that SOTA has Eng Lit that is why standard of Eng high...according to my readings at Kiasu parents that is. So I think SOTA still the place to aim for my girl. Friday is OPEN house for Sota. Remember to register for those interested . -
