I like to ask a question. Does our darlings' baseline behavior changes within 6 months of time? The reason why I asked is because in the playgroup that he attends for the past 9 months, the general feedback is that he is a quiet boy but he can focus during circle time and is willing to attempt group activities albeit with some prompting by the teachers.

Recently about 2-3 weeks ago, I started having feedback from teachers that my son is getting naughty (focus not as good as before, and sometimes don't want to finish the task given) and sometimes very 'high' as in his mood is very buoyant and he cannot wait for one part of the lesson to finish to dash off to do other things. It is not an everyday thing of course but maybe once-twice a week. He was also observed to have hit/poke his classmates for no reason a few times already!

I am really scratching my head on this new behavior! Does the baseline of our special needs child fluctuate from time to time I.e from the quiet/non-violent to hyperactive/violent? I checked with some mommies whom I met during therapies and they said their child's behavior is quite 'consistent' as in if hyperactive during class then still will be as such but gets better with therapies as the years go by. If quiet, then generally quiet but more awareness and participation in class as the years go by.

I am like haiz..... People go therapies to get their child to behave better but my son is like getting worse? Now is the time to change school so I am a nervous wreck!

Erm, actually I don't think it is restricted to asd kids. My NT girl can fluctuate from being talkative to a quiet mouse whether in school or at home. Her teachers said that she can change from time to time and have mood swings.


Sometimes, it could be diet. Like they just had a sugar rush. Or it could be some other external activities that affected them. You may wanna check on his diet. I've known of teachers giving sweets and cookies sparingly. Of sometimes, after a birthday party with cakes, sweet drinks and sweets, they can get pretty high.

Thanks for the advice! Cannot be diet as my son don’t eat new food except when he is with us. Teacher had tried before and he will run away! No new teachers but got new students but he is fine all along (maybe he don even register their presence!)

Therapists also notice his ‘Want don’t want’ attitude recently but not much problem for 1-to-1 sessions as they are after all trained to engage with our kids.

Now I am worried that this new behavior will become his new base-line behavior and not just a terrible 2 phase! Feeling very worried now.

I think that reaction is part and parcel of growing up. Maybe he is getting more familiar with the friends and surrounding so he is trying to push his boundaries?

Or your son find the lesson boring so can’t wait to move on to the other part.

My son always change and change as well. But core values are impt to teach them. Like no hitting other kids, be respectful to adults. Always play nice and take turns.

Keep observing and see where this leads to.

Yah, must observe as quite worried. At home I control him and don’t mind using my hands when needed so behavior quite ok. I think I feel so unsettled as in the midst of planning to change school so quite worried new principal and teachers not receptive towards him.
