                  Recent happening:

My dd is burned out from piano. I think ovewhelmed by grade 8 pieces.

Didn’t help that demand from school is heavy. Usually near bedtime by the time she finished homework. So she doesn’t feel like sitting for another 45 minutes to an hour practising after completing her school work. She just want to play or read storybook. I can empathize with that la. Need to wind down.

She does her school work enthusiastically but her interest in piano (practicing for exam) diminishes to zero. She can attend piano lesson, doesn’t touch the piano at all the entire week, then goes piano lesson again. Of course kena scolded left right center by piano teacher.

We have stopped her weekly piano lesson. Not making progress anyway.

Just wondering in such a situation, how long a break is desirable? ie. to recuperate
Actually do kids even return to the same instrument after taking break? I heard some would switch instrument, some would stop completely

I will most likely switch teacher if she chooses to return to piano.
Teacher expecting her to go exam this Sep. We didn’t sign her up for exam. Too ambitious la.

Sleepy, i’m here to kappo kappo a bit. Mmmm…i can’t give much advise as i do not have similar experience. Maybe you can ask your DD about her plan. Maybe the piano exam and school work too stressful and she needs a break? I’m thinking probably can draft a plan that she is comfortable with and works towards it. She already come so far and now she is near the doorstep of grade 8. Too waste to give up now. Just my 2cts thought.

sleepy, i KPO here with my own story. Growing up, I spent 1 hour on scales, 1 hour on exam pieces daily and absolutely hated every moment of it. My piano teacher even said the drip from the aircon had a more consistent beat than me. I stopped at G7 after 2 years of relentless pleading with my mum who wanted piano as a backup for me. I eventually got to stop after I used the final trump card, I will FAIL for O levels at the rate piano takes up so much time. I never played another note after that and have lost my ability to read notes. I cannot even play C major. My siblings who did not hate it as much, play for leisure but none of us will ever consider teaching it as we are not musically sound enough to teach for a living. Now as a parent, I understand my mum’s good intentions and abhor the amount of money poured into my music lessons. I think a different teacher would have worked better with me and I could have finished G8 but I strongly doubt that I would ever teach for a living because when it is parental will over the child’s desire, it kills whatever interest the child has. I need to bear this in mind as parent myself lol
