Just my little suggestion, maybe mathspark can change the title of this thread to Sec 1 - Chinese since I don't see any thread related to Chinese and we can also help each other on this area. I leave the decision to mathspark.

From their Chinese textbooks, you can see the titles and the authors. Some are 散文, some are poems and there are also extract from certain story. I would then try to get the books from these authors to read, simply because I am also interested in reading chinese stories. If I remember correctly, one of the articles in their textbooks is from 三毛. Last year end, dd's nov/dec holiday homework is to read this book 窗前的小豆豆 and they have test about this book when school re-open. It is actually the Chinese version of Toto chan.

Recently, dd is studying an article on 三国 and before that, we have watched the 赤壁, it indeed help her to understand more about 三国. Guess what, she likes 诸葛亮 aka 金城武

With more fun stuffs added into learning Chinese, I am sure kids would love and appreciate Chinese more in terms of the language itself and its culture.

To me, we, being a Chinese, without doubt, should learn Chinese and appreciate its beauty. I never regretted putting dd in a SAP primary school and insisted she must go to a SAP sec school. I can see her slowly, growing towards our Chinese roots. 😄

Thanks Daisyt, for your list of reading materials. This is the first time I see you type Chinese characters. 😄

While I did notice the \"About the Author\" section at the end of every lesson, it did not dawn on me to search for their other works. I have not heard of トットちゃん until you mentioned it. Sounds like an interesting Japanese story that has been translated into Chinese.

I agree we should make learning Chinese more palatable, but it is quite common to see boys slower at picking up languages. This is my problem with DS, and as time is of the essence, we are forced to find the best strategy to tackle the exam first. Having said that, I must confess the amount of effort I put in to help DS appreciate Chinese definitely pale in comparison to yours.

MintLeaf, MSH is a SAP school right ?

I can think of other Japs story translated into Chinese and very popular - 佐贺的超级阿嬷 and 导盲犬小Q. I have not read these books but according to dd, they are very interesting and touching. Actually she gets to know quite a number of Chinese titles through the books sharing session in class. They have this holiday assignment in year 1, where each of them have to read a Chinese book and do a 3 mins presentation in class.

What type of learning activities in MSH for Chinese ?

Hi Daisyt, MSHS is a SAP school, but DS is not in the HMT class. I find the kids in the Express Chinese class quite weak at Chinese. For example, once when they were working on this 爱国英雄 assignment, I found out his project partner did not even know 岳飞。It must be challenging for the teachers to teach, given the great disparity in the linguistic ability within the school.

Holiday assignments could be producing a 500-word write-up on subjects like 街边小贩,人物or completing a comprehension worksheet based on short stories in a book (eg 空城计). Besides this, they have 文化讲义 on topics like 先秦时代,汉朝,端午节的由来。

DS previously did not feel comfortable with conversing in Mandarin at all. He is making attempts now, albeit slowly, to prepare for his oral exam. In his S3 class, there are 16 scholars and quite a number are from PRC. I am hoping the kids will mingle well soon, thereby creating a conducive environment to push up each other’s language skills, given that the PRC scholars have to brush up on English and DS and others have to work on their Chinese.

My dd's P6 teacher also recommends this book 佐贺的超级阿嬷 to the class. It is from the same publisher as 窗前的小豆豆. I have read 佐贺的超级阿嬷 myself from her and my dd also finds it interesting. However, she has not got the chance to read 窗前的小豆豆. Heard that the original Jap version of 窗前的小豆豆 is more interesting than the eng version of Totto Chan? Will get her to read 导盲犬小Q. Thank you for sharing.

Did you ask them? I remember seeing it before.

I believe this is an abridged version because it is quite short, you can get to read it here first if you still cannot get the book:
