At P5, the child is more than ready to be entrusted with the responsibility. If he forgets, there’s always the next day to do it. Part of life skills. Better learn now than later.

Does he have a file for papers etc that go between school and home? Like forms for parents to sign etc? If so, just add the payment issues to that system. Get him to write down the amount, purpose, date due etc in his notebook or on a sheet of paper if there isn’t a form with the details on it. Money should be put in an envelope or clipped with a paper clip and put in the file for bringing to school. He should not carry the money in his wallet or pocket and get it mixed up with his own pocket money. I think a P5 kid should be able to handle this sort of stuff, and if he can’t, it’s time to practise.

I agree, it’s never too early to teach your kid about managing money. Perhaps put the money into a pouch with a strap and clip the strap to the inside of his bag so it will be next to impossible for him to lose it.


As for keeping track of which fees to pay and the amount, it’ll be good as some parents suggested to keep a handbook where he can record all his monetary expenses.

Chapter books are a great option. Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a good one to start with. We’ve also just enjoyed The Trumpet of the Swan. I much prefer reading chapter books now.

Agree too. They need to be trained. They will make mistakes here and there but that's where they learn. If you deduct a % of it from their ang pow money, they learn fast.
