Please starts reading aloud to your kids daily. Make it a daily activity and read widely. Reading isn't restricted to only books but labels, signs on the road, blocks, magazines, comics..... Please ensure books, papers, crayon, pencils are available all the time and easily accessed to encourage a child's curousity in the world of reading, writing and drawing. In fact, reading starts at home.

Aside reading, please do various activities with your child. Started to train his writing skills, listening, speaking, reading.....

For phonics, you may want to introduce Leapfrog Letter Factory to teach him lettersounds and lettername together. However, do not depend on the DVD itself, please read loads of ABC books and stories, and consider to play ABC cards, ABC puzzle, ABC writing books, ABC arts and craft......

Paste alphabet on the wall at his eye level. So that he always see it and teach according to his pace.

Child learns best through fun activities. Get him to listen, look, speak and hands on.

Just a quick note to say that I use the above 2 hightlighted sites to teach my son the alphabets now. Especially, the 1st website, there is always a book recommendation to follow up aft the teaching of the individual letters. The books are availbale (so far) at Bishan library and my son enjoys it when I read them to him. Its really fantastic!!

Thanks for sharing. These are my favourite sites.

When i taught my 3yo son a year ago, i used
- ABC cards & coloring pages (http://www.coloring.ws/alphabet.htm)

Once he knew about 90% of alphabets, i got him to do
- ABC dot to dot
- ABC puzzle
- ABC tracing worksheets from DTLK

I prefer to associate learning with arts & craft. It is more acceptable and friendly to young tots.

I 've been using some of the ideas here to teach him phonics.

I am planning to send my 4yo to enrichment classes (eg. I can read, Berries World, Little Neuro Tree…etc.) However their charges are high, we cannot afford to send her to those "highly recommanded" school.

May I know are there any enrichment classes out there whereby their charges are economic with lively teaching methods?

Don't get too stressed up. Try the community centre is very affordable. I sent my gal to the art class there and it was only $50 a term. However, don't expect a very posh environment.

I'm looking for enrichment classes in the east area. Budget around S$100.00 - S$150.00 per term. Looking for enrichment courses in Speech & Drama, Phonics & Reading, Chinese Read & Write, Art Class.....etc.

Thanks for your advise. However, CC only accept 5yo and abv.
According to the CC, 4yo can only enrol in TOTS Ballet and Phonic (response quite poor).

There are some CCs in SK that accept 3yo and above. My wife has checked them out personally for my son.


You can try Beijing Language Centre for Chinese, saw that they have branches at Pasir Ris (east?). My son is attending lessons at the Punggol branch. Cheap and effective. You can also buy their songs at $5 per term to practise at home. It’s around $170 + 7% GST per term of 12 lessons. The cheapest we found so far.
