A lot of us are ordering books from Dang Dang. Anybody interested to do a bulk purchase using shipping company ? Will it be cheaper ?

        Happybirdks,

I experienced the same frustration every time I ordered. Note that you cannot try more than 3 times within 24 hours.

Also, each time the payment fails, you need to cancel the order and place a new order again.

Yes it is very frustrating. The problem is with the Citibank card. When I use this card to purchase tickets from golden village website, the exact same thing happens !

I am applying for the DBS Amex card now.
Thanks Tamarind for the info. I will switch to Amex too. But it is so disappointing to have to wait for the citibank card, finally got it only to find that it is giving me so much problem when shopping at dangdang. Wasted my time, should have just go for the Amex in 1st place!

Someone is already doing it at the singaporemotherhood forum. Shipping is charged by the weight of your books. You must make full payment for the cost of your books first, then when the books arrive, you have to pay for the shipping charge.

I had a bad experience (with another spree organizer) of having to pay a lot of shipping charge because my books are heavy.

I also don't advise anyone to send money to people that you have not met before. I also organized sprees before (no time to organize now) so I know how easy it is to disappear with the money.

The safest is still to order on our own.

For dangdang books, the spree organisers are handling an extremely large amount of order! There are too many books, too many diverse titles. Already notice that one particular organiser seems pretty slow in responding to queries. There will definitely be delays in sorting out books, packing them for each respective buyer etc. Also, with such a big order, GST will be incurred.

Really, if you can, order yourself, at least for dangdang books.

              Hi all!

              Just to share....

Malaysia's Popular is selling Odonata's books (eg 100 words etc) individually instead of in sets in Singapore. Per book is RM5.25 which i think is much cheaper than buy it in a set that cost >S$20. 🙂

                sean wife:

Thanks Tamarind. Think I will work harder on their Chinese…and hopefully it gets easier as they become more comfortable with the language. Actually playing games not only stressful for mummies, it can very messy too. Like when we played hide the cards game and they were having a good time throwing the cards all around and hiding in cabinets…when all was over, I had to pick up one by one and arrange them nicely again. I thought the hiding the cards in sand idea is good, but I can’t imagine the mess. Also thought of replacing sand with those foam beads, but think they will end up playing with the beans instead. And I have experience when they get so excited running around while playing such games that they end up chasing each other and forget about the intended ‘game’… and for games like matching the cards, they dun seem to keen either. I guess it’s all a matter of trial and error.

It will be very helpful if anyone can share fun and effective games which hopefully isn’t too messy…

                Hi sean wife,
When my boy is playing the hide and seek games, he dropped the cards into areas that cannot be reached at all ! So I lost quite a few cards this way. Later I specify areas that he can hide, for example, anywhere on the bed only (under pillows, blankets, etc).

The best game is to perform an action or show a real object, then ask him to guess the word and pick up the correct word cards. For example, for 尖, I show him a very sharp pencil, and even use the pencil tip to poke him lightly.
He is able to remember the words very well this way.

I also lay the words on the floor. I will say a word and then he will jump to the correct square. Or I will play music and he will run around, when I stop the music he must read the word in the square that he is standing on.

Since your kids are only 3 years old, it is natural that they will like to play more than learn. My advise is let them have fun, and just keep repeating the words until they remember them. In fact, even after my boy can recognize the words, I repeat the words over at least 4 to 5 days to reinforce his memory.

                  Tamarind,
What is the cost of the entire set of 四五快读 books? I believe there are about 6 or 7 books in the entire set, right? How long do you take to complete 1 book?
The set of 7 books cost a total of SGD 37 including shipping from China. These books are not available in Singapore. I bought them from http://www.dangdang.com but they are currently out of stock except in certain areas of China.

There are 10 lessons in one book, I usually take 4 to 5 days to teach a lesson for my boy who is in K2 now. For my P1 girl, she learns one lesson a day because she is already in P1 and she already knows many Chinese words from her Berries class.

                    Tamarind,

Tks for introducing Si Wu Kuai Du. My ds in p1, he is quite ok on chinese reading since i hv faithfully make him read aloud with me simple chinese story books w/o hanyu pin yin. His chinese word recognition is ok for his level. Thought what u have recommended is good as its w/o hanyu pin yin. In singapore, most children story books come with hanyu pin yin which i dislike as the child will look at the alphabets more than the chinese characters. I actually love the story passage on Si Wu Kuai Du which u have shown on your blog, I believe it will enrich my ds. I dun really need the section on playing the games but juz more reading materials for his level. Any idea what other series of chinese books u have come across.
I totally agree with you about reading books without hanyu pinyin !

I would recommend these story books in my blog :

The first 2 series of books in this page are excellent, but more suitable for girls :

                        Hi Tamarind,

Thanks very much for sharing. Am interested to get a set, but dont hv a Citibank cc.

                        Hi Jess,
Would you be getting a set? If you have the cc, maybe we can share one set after all we live in the same estate. I cud also buy the set off you at a later stage to keep for my N2 gal.

My kids are in Hua. And we read regularly in Chinese with them.
