Hi Fairy_tail,
In Mainstream : how many high ability classes are there, in P5 / P6 ?
(identify these classes ?)
Do pupils here get to do more work here, compared to other classes ?
Are they pushed, to get more work done ? -
In answer to some questions posted in this thread:
1) Rosyth P4 GEP classes this year has 3 classes total 70+ GEPpers
2) There are 4 HA classes in Rosyth yearly. 1st 80 in cohort split equally amongst top 2 classes, followed by next 80 in cohort split quailly amongst next 2 classes. Unlike some other schools, Rosyth does not split the 1st 40 into 1st class, 2nd 40 into 2nd class etc.
3) The rest of the cohort are distrbuted into classes based on their subject strengths and weaknesses to enable better focus teaching
4) Personal experience, compared with other schools, Rosyth does not give that much work. The top 4 classes do have some higher thinking order worksheets. One comparison with other schools would be the P6 supplementary classes after school. Whilst I heard from frens with kids in other schools having to stay back after school 3-4 days a week for supplementary, Rosyth only has 1 day for supplementary per week. Teachers also try to provide other form of "entertainment" (like movie / food / karaoke) to destress kids before PSLE. Depends on parents, some like this arrangement whilst others complain that other schools spend more effort in preparing kids for PSLE.
There is no perfect system that caters for every parents likes or dislike. What is more important for parents is to find a school which you think will fit your kids best in terms of their learning, culture / discipline you want to inculcate, etc. If you are in that institution, you have to accept everything it embraces, it provides as a whole package - you win some, you lose some. -

I'm not sure about what you mean by 'high ability' classes, but I'm assuming you mean the top classes? Two classes will share a rank, so the top two classes would be Integrity and Adventurous. I guess in a way, these classes do receive more work, like higher order thinking questions and extra thinking worksheets at times, but at the bare minimum. Classes would of course progress faster and students are expected to do work fast and efficientlyfairy_tail:

My 2 kids were from Integrity n Adventurous 3/5 years ago. I do not know what sort of homework other classes have but I know that whatever is given to my 2 kids are manageable n they are able to cope well. -

Better !
kids have more time after school end around 1.30 pm
Eg : can go home, bathe, lunch, take a good nap snooze, wake up fresh, still have time to do lot of things, unlike study afternoon session (time is neither here nor there, because time gets \"chopped off\".)
