This is the first year that SOTA has introduced shortlisting. What could be the possible reason behind this - did SOTA expect a deluge of applicants this time round?

Hi mamabung! Thank you for the compliment. I try to answer as clearly as I can. For the still life component, the objects expected to draw are very varied, in my year it was a couple of broken wheels that came off some table and rope. They will provide materials, like charcoal (the willow and the compressed kind), pencils and erasers. I think the time was about 45 mins to an hour, if I remember vaguely.

I hear from some teachers they wanted to make the school standards better by putting in more talented or qualified students through audition. I am not quite clear about the shortlisting process because I never went through that.

Also, the intake for VA students is usually around 80, with theatre and dance a little lesser, maybe 40-50? and music students the least, maybe around 20-30. Teachers estimate that 1000 people try to get through the first step each year (shortlisted). I don't know how many are shortlisted, but the chances of getting into SOTA VA are quite high compared to other art forms, about a 1 in 12/13 people chance.

From reading the thread, I gather that it is best to get admitted Sota for year 1 and if that is not possible to get admitted by year 2 and certainly not later than year3.

So is there anyone from theatre who can tell me over the recent years:

i. How many year 1s and year 2s transferred out of theatre at the end of the year ?
ii. How many year 1s were admitted through the non-DSA admissions after PSLE over the last couple of years?

Any insight will be much appreciated!

SOTA has changed its principal and staff, and along with that, the very essence of the school has somewhat changed.


There is now a reduction of arts curriculum timing and more on academic. The reason being some parents are concerned that the students were spending too much time on arts and less on academic.

Good grief. Is this not School of the Arts??? If parents are concerned about that, they should send their children to other secondary schools instead of Sota.

I am pretty disappointed in the current management.

We did not make the shortlist this year and were told that we have to wait to see if there is an opportunity at the beginning of Y2 in 2016. So it would be interesting to know if anyone joined the theatre program in Year 2?

On another note how many foreign students are there in the group? Does sota restrict the no of foreign students?

Just to share with you, the new principal (Ms. Lim) had mentioned in one of the open house speeches before, that as the school name SOTA goes, the \"School\" comes before \"Arts\". They want to nurture students who are not only good in arts, but also well connected with the society and the world. The message is very clear. What i can see is the school is serious in both Arts and Academics.

I too am curious as to how many foreign students SOTA admits a year. During the TA, I saw a number of foreign students (esp for theatre, I believe) and wonder how many are admitted each year.

The no. of places in SOTA is already so limited and it being a national school, I don’t see why a cap on the no. of foreign students shouldn’t be imposed.

Is there anyone too who feels this way and who can address my query as to how many foreign students are accepted each year? The school management is likely to keep mum over this.
