I have three children. For now, my eldest daughter's plans are to be in biomedical sciences, her younger sister is interested in accounting, while my son wants to study public policy/government. All unintentionally different from each other, and their parents (DH heads risk management in a bank, while I am an educationist specializing in English).
It does look like my kids want to prepare for careers based on academic subjects where they were fortunate to have inspiring teachers and family friends.

I would like to get feedback from those parents whose child has taken Higher Music as one of the subjects in Sec 3? Is it very time consuming? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as my child’s teacher told her to take this as one of the subjects in Sec 3? TIA.

Goodluck8:
Humanity is important if the child wants to go to jc. For my DD,she decided to go to poly, so maths is more important in L1 R4. And since humanity is not so important in computing L1R4, she intend to take up triple science during sec 3. She is better in maths and science than languages or humanity subjects. I respect her choice.
Hi,
In the O level results slip, L1R4 score is for MI. For Poly aggregate, there are 4 scores type, namely
Poly : ELR2B2-A ,ELR2B2-B ,ELR2B2-C ,ELR2B2-D
If you child wants to do Humanities related (ELR2B2-A) or Business related (ELR2B2-B) programme in Poly, then the Relevant Subjects (R2) must include one Humanities subject.
You may want to clarify with the teacher on this. -
If I am not wrong, I think MOE wants a balance between Sciences n Humanities regardless of Poly or JC. So both should be equally important.

I will appreciate any feedback as well as DD would like to take Music as a \"O\" level subject. Have heard feedback that it ca be time consuming and may be different from the ABRSM graded exams.
I had printed out the syllabus for her piano teacher to review and had confirmed back to me that he would be able to incorporate the requirements into her lessons if needed. -
Hi,
I have a daughter who is very strong in Humanities (75 for each Literature, Geography and 91 for History). She got 1st in 2013 and 2nd highest in 2014 for History. However, her Maths and Science are 62 each (they meet the school’s criteria of => 60 to go to express).
Unfortunately in the streaming, she did obtain the double Science and double Humanities and was given double Science and Elect Humanities instead. The reason given by school was that she was not the top 80 in terms of level ranking (based on English, Maths and Science or EMS) - she was 93.
We tried appealing for her to go into double Humanities for she is strong in that area, but the school was adamant not to give, claiming that there is no more space. They proposed another combination with Principles of Accounting, Elect Geography (no History!) and Literature, combined Science (without the Additional Maths). Even her Form Teacher tried to help but was turned down.
My wife and I are very amazed that the school would deter our daughte from taking pure History just because EMS. There are other students who may score slightly higher in EMS but are average in Humanities and they got into the double Humanities instead.
Please advise if there are any course of action that we can take to help our daughter?
Thanks! -

The school sounds very rigid. If the school is adamant, then you may have to consider changing school. Other schools may be willing to look at her strengths rather than just the EMS score.Hi,

Happy Parents:
Hi ! I'm Joanne , a physic and chemistry tutor. I had an ex-student who wanted to take triple maths (emaths , amaths and POA). However , the school did not have that combination. End up she managed to persuade the school to register her for triple maths with SEAB o level. However , she will have to study POA on her own (since the sch doesn't have a timetable cater for triple maths ) and will take POA examination in school .Hi,

* my ex-student did have a tutor to help her out with Poa. (She scored A1 for all 3 maths )
I understand how some kids have forte in certain area but the schools are not providing them with the best subject combination. Perhaps a similar arrangement can be done for your child as well . -
