Yes, it contradicts but I just assume that I have an unfair advantage here in getting balloted in despite the more competition.

Actually, I think more popular school does have the advantage of having a higher intake of " possibly higher achieving students " thru P2B or possibly P2A1. I postulate that these P2B parents are in a way more uptight about their children’s study & thus wd likely prepare them more for primary school thru eg. enrichments etc.

This advantage may carry into primary school education in that more students in the school are having tuitions outside school etc. So, in a way, teachers in high demand schools are having an easier time to produce good PSLE results overall as compared to others.

But, if u r a potentially high achieving student, you probably wd get more attention or assistance from the school teacher if u r in a neighbourhood school as compared to a big name school.

That is just my own thinking. I m not sure if they are true.

Won't say that children in popular schools tend to have more enrichment, than average neighborhood schools.

Nowadays, many schools had already gone single session.
After school end around 1.30 pm -
Many parents place their kids into student care centre.
During P1 registration time time now, you can find many parents' common query, in respective schools' thread -
\"Which student care centre is good or would you recommend, in our school ?
Anyone has experience, pls share ... \"

At student care centres, many children receive tuition.
After school end around 1.30 pm, they go to student care centre to eat lunch first, plus bath time.
After rest a while, their afternoon activities daily routine begin.
Often, kids have tuition in 3 subjects (eng, maths, mother tongue) at student care centre, 5 days a week, from Monday to Friday.
        Around evening, they have dinner.
After dinner, they wait for their parents to come & fetch them home, after work.
Parents prefer to send kids to student care centre, because they are at work whole day. By the time they reach home daily around 8 pm, they too tired, lack energy to guide kids in school work, homework.
But by sending kids to student care centre, at least got people there to supervise their kids school work, & have tuition.

Student care centre located / anchored nearby schools, are doing a lucrative business, across Sg island.

Thus, not true that kids from popular schools tend to receive enrichment.
Kids from average neighborhood schools go student care centre, Monday to Friday daily, similarly do likewise.

Nowadays, parents from neighborhood schools do not lose out.
They are quite on, outsource to professionals to supervise their kids' work, if they lack the time personally to do so

Thanks everyone for their inputs. Very useful indeed.

Hi Qms, for RMPS, you mentioned that the academic part has toned down when the new P took over, but what abt other aspects? Do u feel the kids are given more opportunities to develop holistically now than before? Ive heard that kids at RMPS are given a lot of opportunities to participate in all sorts of enrichment lessons. I think its gd exposure for kids. Also, do u know roughly how many kids go to RI or RGS each year? I guess this will also be a rough marker of whether the sch standard has indeed dropped.

For me, its a tough choice. Im actually more incline towards APS. As i feel that smaller cohort = more teacher-student bonding time. Which i feel is crucial for lower pri kids. However, knowing my child’s character, i will prefer my kid to be in a slightly more competitive sch environment (he lacks motivation) As of now, I think APS gives me an impression of being a very happy relax school.

Smaller cohort = more teacher student bonding time ??? How does that ring true ?? All children are grouped into classes of 30 with a form teacher & also teachers of different subjects. The student to teacher ratio wd always be the same, wouldn’t it ?

Do you mean that subject teachers do need to teacher across different primary school levels and that since APS does not have P3 level & onwards in yr 2015, the teachers wd have less workloads ?

Yes, school PSLE results or statistics wd always be helpful as a marker but nowadays it seems even MOE discourage ( or shall I say, prohibits ) schools to reveal them. ( Haha… Talking about Transparency here… even HDB reveal the latest transaction details very promptly nowadays ).

Qms, would you have details likes how many of the last year’s RMPS cohort went to RI or RGS or for that matter, how many of them have T-score abv 250… or 260 ? as what KC_Spider wonders or even for other schools eg. Zhangde.

Well, my son was in P2 when the new principal came. I didn't check with parents of students who were in higher levels then on opportunities given. Hence, I can't conclude whether students are given \"more\" opportunities now than before. Someone I know who teaches in a popular school in the east said that RMPS is more holistic than the school she teaches. So, I suppose the answer should be yes, students are given more opportunities to develop holistically. Holistic development is something that the current principal has been \"promoting\".

As for involvement in enrichment, my children have been given ample opportunities to be involved. However, I am not sure such opportunities are extended to the majority because I always see the handful of students being selected. But, yes, such involvement is an eye opener for the kids.

Sorry, I do not know how many students go to RI/RGS every year but I heard that every year, only about 10 students scored more than 250 in their PSLE. Do you find this result stellar? 🤷 To me, RMPS is just a normal neighbourhood school no different from Zhangde or GESPS. So, I don't know what is it about the school that parents want to send their children to RMPS instead of ZDPS even though they stay nearer to the latter.

Actually, I am not sure how it is possible to \"assume that chance of getting in is equal\" for RMPS and APS. However, if this is really true, I still believe distance is of utmost importance. Are the two schools really of equi-distance from your house? If so, you may like to consider APS. If you think your child needs to be in a competitive environment, perhaps you can transfer him to another school? APS is a new school, so it is too early to conclude that the school may be non-competitive.

TiongBahru_dad, I will reply to your post later. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, if any of you have other questions, please post them here. I will try my best to answer your questions. Fellow forummers with answers to your questions will also be able to advise.

You must remember that teachers also need to be in charge of CCAs. As this is a new school without CCAs for the time being, the teachers have more time to prepare materials for the curriculum. In addition, teachers not only teach a subject. Some teachers are very versatile and they teach across levels, too.

If you had read the posts in APS, parents mentioned that even the principal also knew the students. I don't think RMPS' principal would recognise my children if they were not in their school uniforms. 😉

RMPS has been silent on such information (apart from releasing the top student's score for the year) since the last principal. Last year, it went a step further by not even releasing the name and score of the top student, as per MOE's directives. So, speaking of transparency.... :skeptical:

Anyway, the aim of MOE is to bring parents away from focussing too much on the score.

To have a feel of what programs RMPS offers, you may like to read through their monthly notifications. From there, you will be able to gauge whether this school is the right fit for your child.

Hi Qms, thanks for your reply.

I am also curious on how the school group the students into different classes at Primary 1.

Do they group them randomly, by time of registration ( thus according to phases the kids come in ) or by maybe, which kindergarten or Childcare centre the child attended. ( thus making it more probable that the kid wd have someone he knows in the same class ) ??

                    Grouping is done randomly.

Hi, just curious and asking for opinions.

Assuming both schools have equal chance of getting in and home-sch distance is not an issue, between APS and Radin Mas Pri, which school will you choose for your child?
Oh yes! APS has the added convenience of an in-house student care centre.
