My dd2 was dignosed with lazy eye when she was about 3+. She went to Eye Clinic at KKH. The best way to correct lazy eye is diligent eye patching. This is a must. She diligently wore the eye patch for the prescribed amt of time from N2 to P1.


During the kindy years, she found it \"fun\" as she was the centre of attention amongst her friends. Called herself Cyborg after the teens titan character. LOL. We bought cute stickers to put over the patch. Think her frens with good eyesight also requested from their parents to wear eye patches too.

When she was in P1, that was challenging. She was more image conscious but continued to patch her eyes as she wanted her lazy eye to be corrected. Fortunately, by mid year, the doctor said she was off eye patch. She still goes back to KKH for yearly eye review.

The most recent check up was last week. The same specialist who has been seeing her all these while was most pleased with her progress as the eye has stabilised. dd is in better control of her eye movements. Even her myopia has reduced, which is, apparently very rare for teens these days.

Doc said that for kids who refused to patch their eyes in early years, will still have lazy eye problem in their teenage years and as adults.

A lazy eye could have a number of different underlying causes, such as high and unequal spectacle power, squint, or some other eye disease such as congenital/childhood cataract.

The treatment of lazy eye must include the underlying cause, plus patching of the good eye. The sequence of treatment of these 2 aspects can differ, but both must be addressed.

eg if lazy eye is caused by high spectacle power in one eye, then the child must wear the glasses during all waking hours, plus patch for the requisite number of hours at the same time.

eg if the lazy eye is caused by a constant squint, then the laziness is usually addressed first by patching, and then squint surgery later.

eg if the lazy eye is caused by congenital cataract, then cataract surgery must be done first, and then the good eye is patched for the requisite number of hours/day after surgery.
