Hi Parents! I happened to find out about this forum. It looks like IJ Nativity thread is not that active as compare to other schools.

My elder girl is in P1 this year. I hope I am not expecting too much but I feel the standard of the school can be a little higher. IMO, the test papers are way too simple when I compare to my nephew's school (SAP school). Hence, majority of the girls are scoring full marks for all subjects. It gives wrong signal to parents who think their children had done well when in actual fact, the questions were so simple.

This is especially so for the Chinese papers. I got a shock when my potato girl could get full marks for oral when she can't even speak a complete sentence in mandarin well... lol. On the other hand, my nephew got 7/10 for oral when obviously, he is the one who is able to speak fluently and communicate much better as his mum is a Taiwanese.

For Math, I am surprised there is no thinking question at all...

As I feedback to my girl's FT, I do hope to see some improvement in the standard. Being too lenient will not help the girls in the long run. This probably explain why the PSLE results is pretty much average.
Hi, CHIJ OLN is a good girls' schools. My friends' children are in the school and so far my friends' children are happy there.

As for the SA1 exams, not only CHIJ OLN sets the papers too easy, my dd from another school has easy test papers too. I saw another friend's son tests papers in Nan Chiau, can be considered easy too with a few challenging tricky Math questions thrown in. I suppose this is common in P1 for students now. However, another of my friend's son has a child in P6 in Nan Chiau, his boy's Math score dropped drastically in Math CA1 paper and Science grade dropped drastically in SA1 paper. My friend's son is the type who can study and score type, capable of attaining marks to go NUS High or RI that type. So u see, it all depends on the school teachers how they want to set their tests papers.

We as parents can only stretch our children by our own and do note that at P3 and P5, there is a \"big jump\". If the child is capable to score very well in P1 and P2 with very high marks, the marks will show a decline in P3. As for P5, since the teachers are pre-preparing the children for PSLE, the standard of exam can be tough and very often you can see marks declining at P5 level.

CHIJ OLN is still considered a good school and don't worry about the simple SA1 assessments. If you have been exposing your child to do very challenging work at home, or at enrichment centres, and she can manage it, you can be assured that your child is coping well.

As for Chinese Oral, I'm not sure how school calculate the marks but I can tell you my dd did badly for TH Oral but so so for her school oral. So you see, TH let me know where is my child's standard and if you want, I recommend you go TH or Berries as some of my friends' children do send them for Chinese enrichment. I'm not talking about CHIJ OLN, I'm saying in general for some of my friends' children who are in the \"branded schools\".

What other parents should worry about is, the easy SA1 assessments give a false sense of security for parents thinking that their children can do well when in fact the assessments are easy. The wake up call will come when the time parents see a sharp decline in marks when the standard of the assessments is raised higher.

Thank you sembgal for the detailed feedback. I truly appreciate. 🙂

I understand what you've put across and tried to explain. The only concern is the assessment at OLN is really too easy. To simply put it, the recent tests were non challenging and I felt my girl got overly confident and complacent. I explained to her that I am very happy with her grades but that was because the teachers set too simple papers and too generous with the oral scores. I hope the standard will be raised after the feedback.

Anyway, I will continue to monitor and put her in a good Chinese enrichment class as what you have suggested. Will see how it goes for next semester and I may transfer her to IJ TP if the standard at OLN remains unchanged.

          Hi princess.gal

Its a good idea tt u transfer your girl out to IJTP.Being over confident is not a good sign.
Ur DD will not be able to catch up in P3 if she becomes too complacent, even in OLN .Hence, u have to be quick in ur applicatíon. :imdrowning:

Transferring out is a last resort.

Otherwise, all should transfer out to IJ TP or St Nicks?
I will continue to feedback for the bar to be raised to a more realistic level.
I am in a whatapps group chat with a couple of other parents from my girl’s class. Majority of us share the same thoughts that the papers were too easy and the teachers should throw in a couple of challenging questions for math.

I am not sure if this will ever happen - test and exam papers for all IJ schools to be standardised. Set and approved by level master or HODs of all IJ schools. This will ensure consistency in standard across all IJ.
