Pathlight School or other mainstream school?

Any student from Pathlight make it to Poly or ITE?

hi
Pathlight or mainstream school depends very much on your child and the kind of support that he needs.
My boy is ASD and we decided on Pathlight after years of observation of how he learns and the environment most apt and beneficial for his development.
He will be in Pathlight for P1 next year. Trying to find parents of kiddies gg there as well. Maybe we can form a parent support group ? Anyone interested :snuggles: ? -

Thank you very much for your helpful reply, Cheers LS!Dear Desertwind,
There are pros and cons putting your child in Pathlight and mainstream.

PL would be a safe haven for those kids who may otherwise have stand out a bit too much from the other kids in mainstream school. And for those kids who need a bit more help and support compared to what is available in mainstream. It sounds like an ideal class-size arrangement and support to me, other than the fact that the kid would need a diagnosis, tons of paperwork to file and a school assessment to get in...

Hi JWL,
Thank you very much for replying to me! I really like what you said about how \"after years of observation of how he learns and the environment most apt and beneficial for his development\". It helped me a lot!
Yes, by now (6 yos) we should have enough years to observe and should have an idea of what work best for our boys.
For us, we have tried childcare centre, private early-intervention centre, large mainstream kindy, small mainstream kindy, private one-to-one sped tuition, KKH ST and OT, private ST and OT etc... Those that did not work out got weeded out.
At the moment, our first choice for my boy is still Pathlight since we would want to get maximum help for my boy for the next 6 years of primary school.
Currently we are in the queue for school assessment at PL and hope that my boy would get an offer for P1 in 2015.
All the best to your boy in starting P1!

Dear all,
Thought to let you know that after agonising for so long and tons of money to get the paperwork done, my boy did not clear the Pathlight assessment.
On the day of the assessment, the minute he reached the classroom with about 6 kids there with him, he cried and scream "don’t want"! Can hear him all the way down at the canteen. Din stop for at least half-an-hour. At the end he calmed down and was one of the first to be returned to the auditorium where the parents were waiting.
So at the end of the day, we don’t have much choice at all. Indeed those kids who managed to get an offer from Pathlight School are really blessed. Because it means they are in a safe environment with maximum support and small class size. Not least because they have cleared the stringent assessment by the PL committee and deemed to be suitable for mainstream education.
For those kids who did not get an offer from Pathlight (like my kid), well, we just have to move on and no looking back. Just like we did not take "no" for an answer in the past, be it from the kindergarten/principals/teachers/PD etc., likewise this "set back" will not get us down.
My boy has come through a long way and he will continue to make it.
Take care all! -

You take care too, Desertwind. :hugs: -
Desertwind,
Like you, my boy didn’t get an offer by pathlight…
Really sad… But like my hubby said, he is still my lovely smart boy, no matter what.
Next yr he will therefore join my daughter’s mainstream school. Will your boy go to mainstream school? I’m expecting lots of liaison with the school now… Really hard… But still hv to move on.

Hi Tamama and Desertwind
Sorry to hear that you did not manage to get an offer from school of choice.
When one door closes, another opens. Hang in there. :hugs: -

Yes, we too were dismayed and sad for a while. Could not help but teared when we first heard the news and spoke to the school. One suggestion was that we can appeal to the school to reconsider or even to appeal to the MP to get into the school. But actually the irony is that we applied to PL because we were sick of the mainstream school rejection. Now even PL reject, so am not going to appeal. Next year my boy will go to a mainstream primary school. Let him try. Because he already deferred one year and approaching 7 yo, can see he is more stable already. Even his kindergarten teacher, principal and school bus driver said that my boy now listens well and more stable!
Take heart, our boys have a lot of strengths going for them too! If they don't take well to mainstream primary school, the next alternative would be to home-school them. Although I can't imagine how this can be done right now and hope we don't need to take this route, we have to keep an open mind.
Our boy's IQ is normal and he is relatively healthy so for that we really give all thanks and praise to God!
