Thks chief, she is taking her chinese lesson in Berries.

Have to go down to CHIJ on Monday, with all her K2 assesments and berries yearly assesment to prove that she is taking chinese as a 2nd language, cause I am Indian and dad is English.

WOW! That's stunning! I'm always very respectful of non-Chinese students taking Chinese as a 2nd language. It's really tough and requires lots of hardwork on the entire family.

Berries is great for pre-schoolers and Primary schools up to P2. I personally feel that Molin provides a more comprehensive treatment of Chinese for P3 and above, and it doesn't hurt to start earlier.

one indian boy in my ds class got A for chinese !!

CHIJ Katong is one option for registering my daughter…anybody like to tell me if is a good school? Seems like they go to Phase 2C. Is that because is not a popular school? Not very good academic? Just wondering because even in this forum not a lot said about that school

Thanks and any info is appreciated!

Candy, it all depends what you want for your child and also the distance from your home. CHIJ Katong, is a sch with holistic education, means more or like a all rounder, Academic wise, last year the top scorer as an AVG 271. I think so.
So far I am happy with the sch, cause I prefer my child to enjoy her sch, not to come home with tons of home work.

Looking around some of the lists in this website, CHIJ Katong is not on the top 20 best schools, is not the most popular with parents, and is way down on the PSLE results list…after all this, why should I register my daughter there?

Are the students just average or are they getting a good academic education just not being so stressed to be no. 1? Students get to the SEC school of their choice or they end up where left over spaces?

So hard… I just want to make sure I am making the right decision. Tnks for any input!!

O.k DD is in Pri 1 this year, the school may not be one of the top sch in singapore, but they are not the last either.
The sch is a all rounder. They recently have a new principal, and the home work is resonable, not too much/or too less. Just nice. The weaker students are identify in the 1st mth (jan), and are encouraged to go for remedial class.
They incorporate ballet, P.E Dance and Gymnastic in the sch curriculum, during P.E.The kids have a sense of identity, and they are very focus in the acadamic. The sch have a common test in May, They identify and divert the Mother Tongue classes from the best to the worse. The kids who did not do well in their Mother Tongue were ask to go for remedial lessons ( sorry they call it Enrichment class) but do remember the marks are not recorded, on;y the year end exams in Oct/Nov will be recorded.

I have seen how competitive the kids were during the may exam. This kids are really smart.
I think they have a balance between acadamic and CCA, which is what I want for my DD. All work and no play is not good either.

At the end of it, as a parent its what you want for your child. Feel free to ask, if I could I will try to answer to my level best.

sometimes whether u can enter into a school is not up to your choice.

I am not sure if KC is good but so far, the past few years PSLE was reasonable. MY neighbour kids go to the school opposite of KC (supposedly one of the best pri school) in the east. Goes to Jiang Edu for chinese and have retired ex-teachers for tuition (& was unwillingly to share the tutor contact), Got < 190 for PSLE.

A lot depends on the school but similarly also on the kids.

If u do not think KC is for u, by all means - Dont go under Phase 2C. Precisley under Phase 2C means no priority to go Tao Nan / Red Swastika, St Hildas / Maha Bodi

My DD is in P2. She is really happy to go to school everyday. She loves her teacher & her friends. She is getting a bit more homework but she can get them done within 2 hour or so.

I agree with other IJ parents. This is definitely not a top school like the opposite one. The key is …my DD loves to go to school and comes back telling me how wonderful of her day !!

Academic wise, they are not weak at all but for some reason, IJ is not on the list. A real example, my neighbor’s daughter (ex-IJ) did really well 2 years ago in PSLE and got in Nanyang Sec.

I recommended two friends to IJ, both mom & daughters are happy about the school. No doubt about the IJ Magic the school has created.

I also notice the IJ parents are not so Kiausu and that’s why you do not see too may discussions on IJ.

I have done a fair bit of research of the CHIJ family schools on their past academic results, and this is my initial assessment.

on general, CHIJ schools do very well in English and chinese. For example, 71% of CHIJ katong's PSLE students had obtained quality passes in English, way above the national std of 43.9%. However their weaknesses seem to be in the science and maths, which their % of quality passes hovering in the range of 45- 50%. in terms of overall passes, CHIJ still performs satisfactory as compared to national or other neighbourhood std.
(These statistics can be obtained from the website).

Based on the remarks, almost all chij students are happy in the school. Personally i took a trip down to a chij school to observe during their recess time, the girls are happy and active and well behaved, which was consistant with the behavioural comments i have read of. Thus i can deduce that the environment seems safe and conducive, as most girls are happy there.
