West Spring Primary

Dear ChiefKiasu,
Yes, we use a combination of approaches that you’ve mentioned in meeting our students’ learning needs as best as we can. We’re happy that thus far, our West Springers are making good progress, in line with our philosophy of providing opportunities for each child to be able to experience little successes along the way. :imcool: :boogie:ChiefKiasu:
That's interesting! How does the \"flexible groupings\" work? Does it mean classes comprise of students of various abilities, but during lessons, students join groups of similar abilities? Or do students study together in the same group but receive customised \"differentiated learning\" by teachers or trainers?West Spring Primary School:
Dear ChiefKiasu,
At West Spring, the approach taken is one of differentiated teaching through flexible groupings during curriculum time to better cater to students' learning needs and pace.
Our 10 additional Flexi Adjunct teachers who are trained experienced former school teachers often work together with the subject teacher to help out in these flexible groupings of differentiated learning to better guide students in their learning.
We've avoided using terms like 'Banding/Streaming' as they could possibly lead to labelling children at such a young age.
At West Spring, we strive to build every child's confidence and provide each child with opportunities to experience little successes along his/her education journey.
I do appreciate your efforts at not classifying kids at such a young age. That's the right approach if we are to build a nation of confident young adults. -
Hi WSPS,
You mention that students are not banded, from end of P3 entering into P4.
is there any banding
- from end of P4 entering P5, and
- from P5 into P6 ?
Thank you -
phtthp:
Please correct me if I am wrong. I think what West Spring is trying to say is that the school does not group children using a broad-based measure, ie. total score, but at a subject-level. So there is no \"best class\" or \"worst class\", as children of different abilities are all mixed. I think this is a good approach, but might be a logistical nightmare for administrators.Hi WSPS,

Chief, understand perfectly what WSPS meant by the process, of no banding, plus the detail she went into.
but need to clarify and confirm with WSPS -
Totally no banding at all across all levels, including Upper Primary P5 / P6 ?
Or
only no banding in P3 / P4, but Upper Primary crucial P5 / P6, still got banding ? -

As mentioned in one of our earlier posts, there’ll be the mandatory Subject-Based Banding (SBB) implemented in all primary schools, from Primary 4 onwards. West Spring will as such offer SBB as it serves to recognise the different abilities of students and give them greater flexibility to concentrate on the subjects they are good at.
