Hi
I know its abit early to talk abt SA1 but since we are on the topic of exams , I would like to ask if anyone knows whether this year’s P1 is following a new chinese syllabus or same as last year.
Cos I was looking at last year Chinese SA1, there’s a section on comprehension but the whole passage is in HanZi and not HYPY. Is that the norm? I thought they are suppose to learn via HYPY and not chinese word recognition yet? Anyone can enlighten? I seriously doubt my daughter’s ability to read the entire passage much less the questions.
Being abit kiasu here, thinking if that’s being the case (the whole passage in HanZi) better try to get her use to the idea of doing comprehension in chinese (whether she can read the whole passage, who knows. only can hope for the best)
Thanks in advance -
Hi ruaqt2,
It's not too early to talk about SA1. It's good to be prepared. There is no change in syllabus for Chinese. It is the new syllabus. In fact, by next semester, the child will be expected to write well, not only be able to read well. Some schools started Chinese comprehension in the written form in P1. PH did not which I felt was not very ideal because the expectation of their Chinese in P2 is a great jump compared to P1. From this forum, I realised the 'great jump' will be distinct every year.
For the MCQ Comprehension, the school will usually give a passage with characters that they could recognize from their tingxie. For smart kids who can't read chi well, they just hv to trace the passage for similar characters asked from the questions and 'hunt' for the answers in that paragraph, then choose the correct option with similar characters again. Usually will be spot-on. Haha. but do note, this technique probably applies to lower primary only.
It's a norm for PH Chinese exam to ask the child to give personal opinion for last question in written comprehension. It requires maturity to answer that question. My girl struggles with that question, not because she could not think of an answer, it's because her answers are usually too profound which end up with characters that she could not write yet. So, I have to tell her to simplify her answer with characters that had been taught. I even thought of giving her a few 'template' answers but realised she might rely on model answers and not think creatively, thus I gave up on that idea.
She was thankful that this kind of question was not tested this time round for CA, but I told her not to let off her guard cos sure to appear for SAs.
It might be alot for you to swallow now
but PH's chinese standard gets more difficult as they progress to higher levels.
One tip, don't just do recent years exam papers, the standard has been reduced in the new syllabus but PH's standard remains high. I let my dd do 2004 Chinese exam papers (the old syllabus) too.
Take it slowly first, don't overwhelm her yet. You can start practising recent years exam papers first. She will pick up and be ready for SA1.

ruaqt,
I share the same feeling as you...without a textbook, how do we parents know how much to cover and what we have not covered. This idea of not having a textbook for English, a CORE subject is ridiculous.
For Open-ended comprehension CL, it's the latest PSLE format to ask the students for their personal opinion. I asked HOD for CL last year. Pei Hwa is QUICK to change format of their exam papers in line with MOE standard. For eg the first section, there was 填写汉字 which my son scored well in. Then it was removed and replaced by 汉语拼音, which is what my son is weak in.
periwinklejoy,
My son's Science notes are messy but it's his handwriting and he could read. So I don't bother. For Maths, hubby said to get Shaping Maths-Maths Builder, Challenging Problems, Problem-solving (Fabian Ng). Science wise, to get authors by Renee Chong, Mabel Cheong and Helen Lee. -

What I eventually did was to gather a list of words/grammar that was covered from the worksheets that the teacher send back for parents to review.ruaqt,

Does your child's english teacher uses the word bank and grammar handbooks? Mine doesn't or at least from what I can see ie no entries at all in the books. -

When my boy was in P1, the sch still used MPH. At least he could revise. Now the sch uses the assessment book which is kept at sch most of the time (can count using five fingers this book is brou back home).
The FT also takes a long time to return worksheets. Hiaz. -

The two books are meant to be used till P3. Her P2 teacher uses both books and claims that by end of the year, they will complete the Word Bank. Both P1 n 2 teachers use the Grammar book. I custom-set worksheets from the Grammar book for her to practise. I'll reprint the same worksheets to practise nearer to exams. She did this set of 8 worksheets three times already so could memorise most of the collective nouns, gender, similes, prepositions, singular/plural, places, occupations.

Hi Mummies,
My daughter is in K2, but kiasu mummy here wants to find out more about no EL textbook in advance.
My son came back with a letter informing us that the bookshop and uniform vendor will be replaced by Pacific. I suspected the present vendor will not survive because of the inefficiency during year end sale of books. -

To be fair, we cant blame the bookshop vendor. Many times, its suppliers are the ones screwing up. -
I went to Popular last night to take a look at the EL My Pals Are Here.
Saw the Grammar Handbook for P1 & 2, but it isn't a textbook because there are exercises inside and costs $21  Then there is this workbook for Grammar, Vocab, Comprehension.
My son's CA1 results are poor...he came back yesterday and cried in the room. Now waiting to see the papers to see what went wrong. He told me the papers were tough. I didn't scream at him because I feel he's under lots of pressure.
