The tutor told me cannot memorise phrases to apply on writing? Any opinion? She said can give my girl idioms to memorise only.

I mean I only know TAS and MS offers creative writing courses but after browsing their materials for P2 at their centre, I feel that each has its pro and cons that I like/don't like. Hence would like to hear other recommendations/options for both english and chinese creative writing courses from other experienced mummies here. Prefer location in the East. Thanks.

im new to this thread.. What is TAS and MS??
Anyone can also share if there are Sept holiday Creative Writing programs around East?

depends on what the tutor wants. My kids tutor prefers to correct their sentence structures. She believed that the kids should be instill with proper writing skills, not memorising other people's work.

              I do agreed with it.

Memorising will make the writing sound forced. If you have time (not just before exams), get the child to read more and internalise the vocab, expressions, grammar etc. The writing will sound more natural.

I realise that memorising is used a lot for Chinese writing, but that is because Chinese formal writing actually requires much more use of standard phrases and expressions, and that is considered good style. It's different for English.

The school teacher gave my dd remark to write more vocabulary and phrases. In my opinion, if did not memorise the phrases how to remember what to write. Is reading story book help in writing?

Reading builds up language skills overall, but the child must make the effort to notice and remember the words and phrases, and practise using them in speaking and writing until they are internalised. In a way, this is memorising, but they must be in context and not isolated phrases and sentences which are forced into a piece of writing. I suppose writing them into a notebook and reviewing them may help, but you lose the context. My kids learned all their vocab from reading and from speaking with us at home.

Anyone tried their holiday writing workshop before? Is such intensive but short period workshop effective? Please share your experience šŸ™‚ I am interested but scared it doesn't worth the money šŸ˜›
