Happiness is a state of mind:
      simpledad:

Is your DC having addiction to his/her hand phone or always being distracted by his/her hand phone? Any good advice?

Hi simpledad, This is a very common problem nowadays. I have established some ground rules to help my dd manage her phone usage. For example, I don't allow my dd to use her phone when she is doing her hw or when she is having her meals. We also set aside some time slots for her to access her phone. As parents, we should also try to set a good example by refraining from using the phone all the times.

I was very sad to hear from one of my friends that he hardly talk to his kids nowadays and that it is easier to reach his kids via watsapp. This is a wake-up call for me. Since then, I made it a point to be more involved in my dd's school and social life. I encourage her to talk to me about her friends by sharing with her my own share of \"teenager experience\". I also try to find out which social media platform is she more active in and try to monitor her from a distance (i.e. cannot comment or like her posts, just quietly observe. Otherwise they may block you). This will also allow me to track her phone usage and circle of friends.

I must qualify that my dd is a very good girl and I am very close to her. I hope this is useful to you as well. All the best :rahrah:

Thanks for the advises, \"Happiness is a state of mind\"

        Dear Parents,

Apparently after the recent messaging from our PM during the national day speech, among the my DS and his classmates, they are discussing among themselves that they can now go for the bear minimum and don’t have to work too hard as long can make it to Poly is good enough. "Get a degree for what!!!"

I was totally disappointed when my DS share with me that among themselves, this is how they wish to set path in life.

Nothing wrong that now the government is helping those poly and ITE students, but sad that our kids have mis-interpret the message.

          Simpledad,

Sometimes, misinterpretation like this are best caught and corrected on the spot rather than letting it go.

What was your respond to your DC's misinterpretation?

Of course like all responsible parent, we did the right thing and have a good lengthy talk with our DS.

But actually this is not about me or my DS, the worrying thing is how this messaging can be misinterpreted and I don't think my DS & his classmates is the only one and only stand alone isolated case and there isn't any other.

Just sharing for general awareness that this misconception is happening among our kids.

              Dear Simpledad

I asked my ds to read yr post n he tells me that in his class, they don't feel the same way as yours.

Whether Poly or JC, its all dependent on the child n his interests.

My DS is very academic n not creative. He will not survive in a Poly. I suppose your DS n his friends are just making light comments n I don't think you shld take it seriously.

Eventually, they will 'awake' n realise that education is still important in Singapore.

Don't know if you realise by now, a lot of Poly students eventually continue their education n pursue a degree course. Hardly anyone stops at Poly now.

              So don't lose heart.

              😄

Thank-You Zbear for your kind encouragement.

And trust me, I truly understand the important of education, let me share my story so that our kids out there can appreciate the important of education.

My O level result can definitely put me into one of the better JC but due to my family financial situation then, knowing that there wouldn't be money for me to go all the way to Uni, I took up the next best option and went to Poly.

With a diploma, joined a MNC working very hard as a assistant engineer, I was doing very well after a couple of years. Unfortunately because of my qualification, to get a promotion to a Engineer post is like forever and the joke is I have 2 fresh grad degree holder holding the title of Engineer purely because of their qualification, under my charge.

That was the moment I realize that no matter how good you are or how hard you work, qualification still play an important part in your progress upward.

Hence, I decide to take a degree on a part time basis, and trust me it is definitely not easy to balance your family, work as well as your study, it's really no joke. And to anyone, even now I will tell him or her that if you have a choice, complete your studies get a degree as early in life as possible first.

Ok let con't....Even with a degree, I need to work double hard to prove myself cause on record, I was a assistant engineer before.

Eventually I become the HOD, but my success took a very long & difficult route and to all the kids out there, if you have a choice study hard, do aim for a basic degree first so that you can have a good head start in your career. Anything else will get you start as well with the government support now but eventually you will still be lagging behind.

Do not follow my route, its long, difficult and painful. Though sweetness at the end, if you have a choice.

                Cheers & happy reading.
