Hi parents of AHS, need some advice. DD in P6, AHS is in our list if she can make it. Like to understand if the school has a very strong Chinese culture and hence the students should be very strong in the language? Although my DD does HMT, she is still very "English" in her train of thots and formation of sentence so not sure if she can fit in well. Appreciate some advice. Thanks!

        Hi,

My DS is currently in AHS Sec1. I would say the HMT in AHS is quite tough. The students have to read China History in Chinese. I almost died when I saw my ds China History textbook hahaha My son is not strong in CL. He was admitted into AHS base on his CL PSLE results, not HMT and has been doing badly in his HMT since beginning of the school year. I guess he will be put into non HMT class next year.

Hi, any parents can advise how to improve on Chinese composition besides sending him for tuition. My Ds is too weak on compo moreover it's HML, first time taking....

          Hi,
Is your DS in Sec 1? I have given up on my DS's HMT, I'm prepared for him to be placed in standard CL next year.

Personally, I feel that CL tuition don't really help. To improve CL, the child must really read a lot, must put in effort to look up dictionary to improve Chinese vocab. A lot depends on the effort put in by the child in order to improve CL standard.

If the sch has very strong chinese culture, doesnt mean u need to be very strong in chinese lang...
But u mustnt dislike chinese lang so as to fit into the sch culture...
AHS is a SAP sec sch...but not all SAP schs req all students to take HMT...
It's best to check directly with the sch if AHS is one of yr child's choiced schs....

But is the 中国历史 comes under the examinable subj ?
Even in DHS, it is not under GPA computation...

My DD is in Anglican High and i kind of regret it. Comparing Ahs with Chung Cheng Main, i think Ahs is not supportive of children doing Higher Chinese. The school offers Higher Chinese to the students EXCEPT dsa students. Then, after doing Higher Chinese for one year, i keep feeling all these years that the teachers cannot wait to fail the student and push them to normal Chinese. My DD is one good example. In her sec one exam, her compo marks and oral marks were unreasonably low. The tutor and i had the feeling that the marks were purposely lowered to push her to do normal chinese in sec two.

I have been wondering these years whether i should have put her in Chung Cheng Main instead . At least CCM offered all students to do Higher Chinese all the way to Sec three. There are benefits in taking Higher Chinese all the way to O level. If students get D7, they don’t have to do Chinese anymore in JC. If they get C6, straightaway can deduct two points when apply for JC. My DD now cannot have these benefits.

If your child can do higher chinese in sec one when entering Ahs, then let him or her do first. Make sure end of year whole 50 can already. If sec one don’t do, sec two want to do, they put all sorts of funny excuse to stop the child leh, like even english must be very good. Very funny la, english must be good then can do higher chinese. DD heard from seniors.

If your child do Normal Chinese and then want to do Higher Chinese in Sec two,

I have a dd in CCHM sec 2 n a ds in AHS sec 1. Both my kids came from same primary with no HCL background.

I saw the HCL papers frm cchm and AHS. Cchm HCL standard is higher as compared to AHS. In AHS sec 1 students hv no tingxia weekly but Cchm ensure students memorise the CI YU SHOU CE and TINGXIE weekly. Every week they are to suppose to read news article and write their DU HOU GAN. The teacher ensures every students hand up. Hence is very stressful to learn HCL in CCHM. My dd is struggling with her HCL in CCHM.

Whereas in AHS sec 1, HCL is more relax. Lesser homework. Probably the stress will come in sec 2. My ds is enjoying HCL more than his primary sch days.

I hv DS in sec 2 and 3 this yr, both taking HCL.

When DS1 is in Sec 1, there was \"spelling\" weekly and it is not the type of spelling where teacher read and students write. It was the type where you fill in the blank with no helping words/hints at all, using the suitable Chi-Yu in the text. It was too wide a selection and most students fail the spelling. :imdrowning: After which , they stop having it. And Chi-Yu is not tested in O lvl.

Yes, these 2 yr, seems like it has lesser homework for HCL for both DS. But they do have homework for this holiday.

And yes, school are very strict, if overall <50%, have to drop HCL. No appeal allowed 😓
