Thank you, slmkhoo. The answer given is Mother asked Peter why the dishes had not been washed. Do you agree with the answer?
I also thought of that possibility, but then I thought that the given sentence should be:
Mother asked Peter why the dishes were not washed.slmkhoo:
\"Why are the dishes not washed? \"Mother asked Peter.
Mother asked Peter ________________________________.
Need help for the above question. Thank you very much.
\"Why have the dishes not been washed?\" Mother asked Peter.
Since the answers usually mirror the given sentences very closely, I think \"had not been\" has strayed a bit further than necessary, though the meaning is the same. -
Read the qn wrongly. Agree with smkhoo.

simkhoo is correct. The question "Why are the dishes not washed?" is in the simple present tense.
From direct to indirect speech, simple present tense is converted to simple past tense:
Mother asked Peter why the dishes were not washed. -

I'm not sure about the 'but'. It doesn't seem necessary although the meaning is the similar. The original sentences and the first synthesis seem to answer the question \"Did your aunt report the matter to the police?\" while the 2nd synthesis seems to answer the question \"Did your mother and aunt report the matter to the police?\"
:thankyou: guru!sushi88:

My mother reported the matter to the police. My aunt did not report it.

Gurus, are both answers ok or not?
It was my mother, not my aunt, who reported the matter to the police.
It was my mother but not my aunt who reported the matter to the police. -
Reny was …when her father scolded her in public and turned as red as a beet.
1) horrified
2) shy
3) humiliated
4) terrified
Is the answer shy or humiliated? -
Hi James Bond,
The answer should be ‘humiliated’ which has the same meaning as ‘shamed’; a common reaction when we get a tongue-lashing in public.
To be shy is to be nervous/afraid of strangers, not appropriate in this case. -

I have another question.
Lara’s parents did not allow her to go to the camp although she pleaded repeatedly.
Ans:
1. Despite the fact that Lara pleaded repeatedly, her parents did not allow her to go to the camp.
2. Despite her repeated pleas, Lara’s parents did not allow her to go to the camp.
Kindly advise which is the correct answer and help to explain.
Thank you…
