Hi donkey, your dd is in P2. How do you feel about the standard of CA1? I can't guage from my dd's class because there were only 1 or 2 students getting band 2 for each subject. I would like to know the general feel across the level. Do you think the papers are fair towards the middle-ability and the weaker ones? I am not only kiasu, I am kpo too.

Hi E3,
Children in SAP schools are generally Chinese because language medium used is Higher Chinese, which is not easy. Before I registered my son in Pei Hwa, I heard about the strict teachers and emphasis on discipline.
Pei Hwa is a SAP school, and teachers are quick to correct anyone who say that Pei Hwa is a neighbourhod school.
Regarding the example my friend told me-the boy’s father is right to teach his son basic manners. When my friend told me about it, I was rather shocked about the boy’s rudeness. I don’t know which school the boy was from. But the boy’s father brought him to the school just to say good bye to his teachers and friends. The least the boy could do was to say thank you. -
Janet, We did our research on PH's character development before I decided to register my dd. She is easily influenced so would like her to be with friends who can be of positive influence to her.

E3,
I like Miss Chan Lai Peng, the previous principal. I was sad she left Pei Hwa the same year my boy was in P1. She is truly a principal who cares for her staff, the students and the school culture.
1) She explained why there are many cameras in the school compound-reason is for the security of the students.
2) She also told us why she didn’t want to take in many parent volunteers and school is short of help-reason is that she will try to take in the children of the PVs because PVs have served the school with effort and time. When my hubby did PV and met her on Saturdays, she will stop to say hi and thanked him for his effort. -
donkey:
what will be the best questions to ask in the MTP section?
I guess it depends on the child. If we know the weaknesses, we can ask for help from the teacher how to improve. This is of course the ideal case. -

Have not encountered such a daring teacher yetJennifer:
I was so fedup that I loudly complained why exceeded time limit for so much. And also dropped hints to other parents waiting for the same te acher that one cannot be so inconsiderate.
don't the teachers signal for the parents to leave? in ds' preschool, the teachers tell the parent politely that his/her turn is up. if want additional \"airtime\", have to request to be the last one.

Well then we should grant the teachers the courtesy of sticking to our alloted times then. That way, everyone will not have to wait for everyone else! I believe that there would be parents with questions like what the school is doing about dd, ds, this and that and sidetrack to who knows where. What I intend to do is to concentrate on the top few questions about dd performance so far.
Btw is it for P1 students’ parents only? I’m thinking how great it would be if we can track the our kids’ progress in school through their website, with the teachers input their comments regularly instead of waiting for months for the report. Can only dream I guess. -
Hi, I would like to know how your kids are taught to answer the comprehension question that requires them to refer to a sentence in the passage. Are they told to omit the fullstop after the quotes or to include it? For eg, the child wrote:
The sentence is "That is a flower.".
I am referring to the fullstop after the closing quotes. I realised there were some inconsistencies in how the kids were instructed by their respective EL teachers. -

There is a fullstop after quoting the sentence. My DS's English teacher last yr was really fantastic. She went thru each paragraph, looking for main idea in the compre, not only that, she went thru each compre question, making the students circle what, where, when, how & taught them what is the question asking about.Hi, I would like to know how your kids are taught to answer the comprehension question that requires them to refer to a sentence in the passage. This yr, my DS does the compre himself then the teacher will go thru the answers, Ds will mark himself , do corrections then hand in. Compre passage is so clean....

Thanks for the reply. That was what I taught my dd last year. She was penalised for putting the fullstop for her P1 SA2 Mock Exam last year. Thus, I told her to follow her P1 teacher's instructions. This year, she did not write this fullstop for CA1 but was not penalised because her teacher told them that some of them were taught to omit the fullstops in P1. Also, they have not done enough comprehension practises in class to come across this kind of question for this year's teacher to give them her instruction. However, she did mention that if they omit the fullstop for the SAs this year, they will be penalised. I really hope it's consistent across the levels.

Your ds's previous year teacher was very good. That's the right way to do compre. The difficulty level gets higher so it is good to get main idea for each para. Several years ago, I had attended an English course that taught us how to teach students to work on comprehension and was instructed to teach them this way too. I taught my dd the same thing but her passage was also clean. Somehow, they are still a little fearful of 'messing up' the passage, in fear of being reprimanded for untidiness. I guess we should tell them that it's ok to be untidy sometimes. It may save them in the end.
