My girl is 5 yrs old, you can see her performances.
Reading notes is the very first step. If the method is good, the kids will catch up easily.
The 1st video shows my girl plays grade 6 piece 'the little negro'; the 2nd is she plays grade 5 exam pieces in July and she has taken the grade 5 exam on 11 of Sep. The result will come out soon:-)

Wow, that's super young to be doing grade 5. Guess it helps to have a piano teacher as a parent. Is this the first piano exam she has done, or has she taken previous grades?

Impressive! I saw other videos by you. Your son and daughter are very talented. Is your daughter going on to grade 8 next?

Meimei has to pass the grade 5 theory before taking any higher practical grade. I think better teach her some very beautiful songs which are her favorite. She is practicing Nocturne by Chopin and Children’s Corner by Debussy. She also started her violin lesson after her exam.

5 years old do grade 5… 6 years old do grade 5 theory, and then 7 years old do grade 8. Hmm… we are seeing some record breaking feats here.

Do update when exam results are out on 29 Sep.

My son obtained his Diploma Exam of Trinity College when he was 10. Did it break the record?

Haha, so far I have only heard of a 5yo getting distinction for grade 5, and another 8yo getting distinction for grade 8. No idea about diploma. You are a piano teacher, have you seen any younger ones at these milestones?

Not sure if your son broke 'record' but for ATCL diploma, obtaining it before 12 years old is not totally unheard of.

One P5 student just received ATCL diploma at diploma ATCL Conferment Award Presentation 2014 held in May. Think the student is not yet 11 too.

Another one (previously from nafa), now in upper secondary, got his diploma before 12 years old too.

Would be interesting to find out if any student under 12 has obtained ABRSM diploma.
