Hi donkey, your dd is in P2. How do you feel about the standard of CA1? I can't guage from my dd's class because there were only 1 or 2 students getting band 2 for each subject. I would like to know the general feel across the level. Do you think the papers are fair towards the middle-ability and the weaker ones? I am not only kiasu, I am kpo too.

My dd score 80 for CL , 70 for Math and 63 for EL. I did not ask about her classmates' scores.. maybe i should ask tonight. She made tonns of careless mistakes. I feel the papers generally are ok.

Thanks for your feedback. I had seen the papers. I felt the papers generally required them to work fast, accurate and had to know more than what they were taught in school. Kids must be seasoned with many exam papers in order to do well.

I've gone through the CA1 papers briefly with my son...best subject is 69% for Science, followed by 68% for Chinese. Maths is the worse.
Majority of the Science and Chinese are careless mistakes. English wise, it's the comprehension which pulled him down and cloze.

I got no mood to go through the papers thoroughly bcos my throat is so painful, and my nose is so blocked. :stupid:

There was a Sci qn which I thought was totally out of point for this CA1 - asking which graphs depict the correct level of oxygen and carbon dioxide after some insects died after 2 days in a sealed container. The topics to be tested is only chapter 1 to 3 - living, non-living things, animals and plants. Nowhere was there any worksheets on this type of qn or any mention in the textbook.

Be prepared for more of such questions in future papers and higher levels. The question is probably testing for the understanding that one of the gases , carbon dioxide, will be given off during the process of decomposition. In this case, oxygen level decreases and carbon dioxide level increases in the sealed container. Have the kids been taught how to interpret graphs yet? I am not yet familiar with new syllabus topics but could this qn be related to topic on animals?

Full marks will be awarded to the correct side workings during PSLE if there is transfer error from workings to answer space. Benefit of doubt is usually given. However, your boy should ensure that he manages his time well if he wants to write down his side workings.

Chill, ladies! Its only CA1, a small percentage, still can catch up in SAs.

My child did not do as well as last year. She topped her class for EL last year SA2 and now, she scored even less than Jennifer's son, and I am cool about it. :lol: Careless mistakes and genuine ones that she does not know. Its alright. I took it tat CA is a great chance for me to let go and see how she coped. I 90% let go, even nagged 90% less, not entirely volunteerily on my part tho, just too tied up. If the child does well, great, if not, its only a small percentage. Scoring 70 and 90 only makes 2% difference in the overall 100% for the year. Anyway, most importantly, I want her to learn to be more independent and more self-disciplined. Frankly, even tho she did not score as well, wow...her handwritings improved, tat is a good effort during exam I thot. No more doc's handwriting. She looks like she is quite determined to do better next exam as she did admit that she could have spent more time practising and revising instead of watching movies and reading books(tons of them).

Well, its only primary 3 and 4, still a long way to go.

Anyway, I find the graph does not depict the levels correctly too. Just very surprised at the qn. There was another qn asking whether a tree with a bird's nest fern on it will grow as well as other trees. This qn is subsequently cancelled after the paper is marked. Irregardless whether the pupil ans correctly or not, everyone gets 1 point. :?

I asked my elder boy whether workings should be done for section B MA paper. He told me have to. I don't hv the mock paper with me now. Going to check with the teacher at the PTM.

A lot of exam tactics to reinforce in my boy :stupid: He knows the stuff, but is losing marks due to carelessness.

Though it is only CA1, it is his way of approaching the test papers that irks me.

There is a compreh passage in the EL paper that states bamboo is a type of grass in its 1st paragraph. The 1st qn is Bamboo is a type of _____. He chose Shoots even though the passage clearly says Grass. I asked why, he tells me he does not agree with Bamboo being Grass, he thinks Bamboo is a Shoots. :x How can be like this :x :x

Cool, IJJ. I must admit I was really anxious for her CA cos it was the first time she sat for hundred-mark Chinese and English papers. Like you had mentioned, CA is only 10% so the effect of her mistakes was miniscule. Nonetheless, she felt the pain from the ridiculous mistakes she had made, which not only cost her some marks but pride as well. I didn't have to say much after she found out what went wrong. She learnt a couple of lessons from this CA:

1) Don't be over-confident
2) Be more meticulous in her checking

I shall see whether her attitude changes for the SAs.

Could it be to raise the standard of exams cos PSLE results dipped last year?
