There was a Sci qn which I thought was totally out of point for this CA1 - asking which graphs depict the correct level of oxygen and carbon dioxide after some insects died after 2 days in a sealed container. The topics to be tested is only chapter 1 to 3 - living, non-living things, animals and plants. Nowhere was there any worksheets on this type of qn or any mention in the textbook.
Be prepared for more of such questions in future papers and higher levels. The question is probably testing for the understanding that one of the gases , carbon dioxide, will be given off during the process of decomposition. In this case, oxygen level decreases and carbon dioxide level increases in the sealed container. Have the kids been taught how to interpret graphs yet? I am not yet familiar with new syllabus topics but could this qn be related to topic on animals?

A lot of exam tactics to reinforce in my boy :stupid: He knows the stuff, but is losing marks due to carelessness.
Though it is only CA1, it is his way of approaching the test papers that irks me.
There is a compreh passage in the EL paper that states bamboo is a type of grass in its 1st paragraph. The 1st qn is Bamboo is a type of _____. He chose Shoots even though the passage clearly says Grass. I asked why, he tells me he does not agree with Bamboo being Grass, he thinks Bamboo is a Shoots. :x How can be like this :x :x -

My boy is already an independent worker. He did very well for the mock papers in all subjects. The CA1 papers came as a rude shock. -

Cool, IJJ. I must admit I was really anxious for her CA cos it was the first time she sat for hundred-mark Chinese and English papers. Like you had mentioned, CA is only 10% so the effect of her mistakes was miniscule. Nonetheless, she felt the pain from the ridiculous mistakes she had made, which not only cost her some marks but pride as well. I didn't have to say much after she found out what went wrong. She learnt a couple of lessons from this CA:
If the child does well, great, if not, its only a small percentage. Scoring 70 and 90 only makes 2% difference in the overall 100% for the year. Anyway, most importantly, I want her to learn to be more independent and more self-disciplined.
Well, its only primary 3 and 4, still a long way to go.
1) Don't be over-confident
2) Be more meticulous in her checking
I shall see whether her attitude changes for the SAs. -

[/quote]It is not compulsory, but encouraged for section B as side workings will not be taken into consideration if the answers in the answer spaces are correct. However, working out the answers will help in his thought-process. If he presented his workings, it would be easier to trace his problems/misconceptions if he gets the answers wrong. [/quote] -

I got the sore throat and blocked nose from my kids...knew I won't be able to 'escape' it bcos of the close contact.
Yes, it's more important to look forward and focus on the weak areas and REMIND the child that those careless mistakes caused him to lose crucial marks. What you can do is to calculate those careless mistakes with the child and show him/she that the total marks could have been higher. My aunt taught me to do that. My son was like 'stupid me. I could have scored higher marks'. :stupid: -

My previous job hazards do hv an effect on me to be result-oriented. :oops: My girl had done well, I hv to learn to accept that mistakes, careless or not, will be made somehow. Most importantly, try not to repeat them. Calculating the mistakes she made may put her off and take away the joy of learning. She may become competitive. I still want her to enjoy her childhood. Quoting IJJ, they still have a long way to go.

Yes, education is a very long journey. I’m always reminded of this.
So it’s more important to run slow & steady than to get ‘burnt’ and the child is uninterested to go that extra mile at P6. -

My child did not do as well as last year. She topped her class for EL last year SA2 and now, she scored even less than Jennifer's son, and I am cool about it. :lol: Careless mistakes and genuine ones that she does not know. Its alright. Frankly, even tho she did not score as well, wow...her handwritings improved, tat is a good effort during exam I thot. No more doc's handwriting. She looks like she is quite determined to do better next exam as she did admit that she could have spent more time practising and revising instead of watching movies and reading books(tons of them).
