If I have to choose between a day trip to Yokohama (cup noodle factory and ramen museum) or Odaiba, what would u recommend?

Note that the museum in Yokohama has an admission fee of 500Y and the one in Osaka has none.
I read a lot of good reviews on the 2 aforementioned activities in the museum. -
Anybody participated in cultural activities such as making simple sushi with the locals when in Japan?
Appreciate advice/tips, please.

I read a lot of good reviews on the 2 aforementioned activities in the museum.[/quote]Yokohama it will be!! My kids are voting for Yokohama too. We'll be staying at Metropolitan Marunouchi which is just above Tokyo Station so can get there easily by train. :rahrah: -
Tokyo Station is a very convenient location with subways, rails and shinkansens.
I forgot to add that at Yokohama, you can walk along the "bay" and visit the Chinatown is just a train stop away.

Am thinking of visiting Mt Fuji day tour + cruise
And also visit the factory outlet there
Can u recommend any other place ?
Not sure if we can have a good view of Mt Fuji as it is snowing in Dec?
Right now our planning is :
2 days in Sheraton just next to Disneyland
As will be visiting Disneysea
After which we will move to Ginza and stayed there for another 4 nights
1 day set aside for Mt Fuji tour

I read from internet.
A few years ago, my family went to Japan in Dec. The view of Mt Fuji was simply fantastic. There was no snow at Kawaguchiko. We put a container of some water out of our window. The next morning, it was frozen! We didnt do the cruise mainly because it was cold & windy, and not many were doing. However, you may want to try Kachi Kachi ropeway which is not too far (walk) from Kawaguchiko station.
You may also consider spending a night at Kawaguchiko to enjoy the hotel’s onsen, traditional kaiseiki dinner and breakfast. Be warned, it is pretty expensive and can easily costs more than 10k JPY per person with 2 meals.
From Tokyo, you can go Yokohama and visit the Cup Noodle Museum. It should be fun for young and "old". I have not been there but heard from my colleagues who went but the museum in Osaka.
There are many factory tours available in Japan but not really in Tokyo.
In Hiroshima, there is mazda factory tour.
In Yokohama, Okayama and other parts of Japan, there are kirin beer brewery tours.
In Kobe, there are sake museums where one can free taste sake.
These places are quite a distance from Tokyo and thus may not be feasible unless you venture out of Tokyo.
For my family, we stay in cheap-cheap hotel for most parts of the trip. You may consider the hotel-chain like toyoko-in and super-hotel. They are conveniently located near the JR stations and most include a buffet BRK. We are rice-buckets and as long as there is rice with miso-soup, we are ok. Bread, cereal, coffee etc are also included to cater to westerners. Some even have a hot-spring in the hotel.
My opinion: it is not necessary to stay in western hotels (more expensive) unless you can’t sleep on the futon. -

winter time is the best time to see Mt fuji due to the clear weather. The factory outlet is Gotemba Premium outlet which is just at the foot of mt fuji. You can see mt fuji up close at the outlet. There are tour bus from sjinjuku going to gotemba premium outlet. Mt fuji is best view from a far. If your tour to Mt Fuji is to go up to the Mt itself you will not be able to enjoy the full view. It will just be on a mountain.
Hokone is another place to view Mt fuji. Check out the 1 day odakyu pass, which allow you to take a variety of different types of transportation, tram, ropeway, ship and up on a onsen mountain. The pass is about Y2000+ -
I have not been to Gotemba Premium outlet and unsure what’s available.
Hakone is pretty nice but I still prefer Kawaguchiko. I am never sick of seeing it "smoking" away… -
Everyone who goes to Japan wants to see Mt Fuji. Let me delicate this post about Mt Fuji.
Best time of the year to view Mt Fuji.
The rule of thumb is - clear view of Mt Fuji are during cold time. Thus, winter is the best season to view, plus with the snow cap, is exactly like what you see in picture. In peak winter, almost the whole mountain will be white. In summer, chances are much much lower, except in the early morning or evening. Snow cap is usually fully melted during the peak summer, then it will look at a normal mountain.
Best place to view Mt Fuji.
Mt Fuji should be view from a far. You might join some tour that say you are going to the 5th station of Mt Fuji !! Sound good, but once your feet is on Mt Fuji, you will be seeing other mountains around Mt Fuji NOT Mt Fuji itself... Your tour should include a stopover at one of the 5 lakes.
The 5 lakes around Mt Fuji are the best place to view Mt Fuji, and that's where you can get reflection pictures of Mt Fuji on the lakes etc .... They are call Fuji 5 lakes (Fujigoko) - Kawaguchigo, Saiko, Yamanokako, Shojiko and Motosuko. Kawaguchigo is the easiest to access from Tokyo.
Other place to view Mt Fuji
Hakone ! Hakone is a popular place to do a 1 day or 2D/1N trip from Tokyo. During your round on Hakone Freepass, on a clear weather you will be able to see Mt Fuji from the ropeway or from the ship.
If you are game for shopping and seeing Mt Fuji, try Gotemba Premium outlet, which is at foot of Mt Fuji. You should be able to see Mt Fuji all year round, as it is so close. You will be very unlucky if very cloudly or heavy rain to missed Mt Fuji at Gotemba.
Places to view Mt Fuji from Tokyo City itself
If you have no time to go outskirt, Mt Fuji can be seen from many many places at the city itself. Sometimes you can even see it on your train ride. Again, winter time is when your chances are high. Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Ropponggi Hills etc... basically just get yourself high up somewhere with unblock 360 degrees view ... you should be able to find Mt Fuji.
What you may not know about Mt Fuji
It is the highest mountain in Japan, and it is a ACTIVE volcano. Yes, it can erupt anytime and it is overdue for an eruption. The last eruption was in 1707-1708. The timeline is every 300 years, thus it was overdue for an eruption since 2007.
I always thought that volcano eruption are very predictable and measurable, there will be enough time for evacuation before an eruption come. I have been to a few active volcanoes mountains in Japan, and seen they have measuring and predicition station on the mountain, with warning system etc. However, with the recently Mount Ontake incident, I am definitely taking a step back. Sometimes mother nature is still unpreditable.
Although is the highest mountain in Japan, is one of the easiest mountain to climb, even kids can do it. Mountain is open for climbing during summer and thousands of people climb each day. Mainly foreigners are the ones who climb, and it like a UN mass climb activity.
I lived in Japan for a few years before, and seen documentary shows on what will happen when Mt Fuji erupt.... Errr ... :censored: I would just say I do not want to be there when it happen.
Anyway not to scare people about Mt Fuji. I am still visiting Japan every year, just that I am over going up to the Mt itself. Even with people are avoiding traveling to Japan cos they scared of radiation ... I do say is a bit crazy, as long as your itinery does not includes a tour a fukushima nuclear plant or 50km near it... it should be safe.
Enjoy your holiday in Japan ...especially with the weak Yen now, is soooooo cheap to go Japan. -
