I feel that the kids shd have their break of doing nothing before they embark on another 6 years journey. reading for leisure is fine and other hobbies but sec 1 preparation kind of kills their well deserved break.

I think that's how most parents feel. Until their kids' Sec 1 results shock them back into reality.

Let them have a week of doing nothing. But plan activities for them to do to keep them gainfully engaged. It's just like after a marathon, you should not just lie on the floor to cool down.

Secondary school is very different from Primary school, with a lot more distractions due to CCAs and other stuff. It is better that your child goes in well prepared for the 1st few months of academic work instead of suffering culture shock after 3 weeks when tests starts.

I know where you are coming from. It's about keeping the mind engaged, not totally switched off. ds is a sprinter, he will rest after his competition , try out out other sports when he doesn't have to focus on sprinting, swimming, tennis etc. what I am saying is there is really no need to jump into sec 1 school syllabus.

Building on mental strength activities, stamina, pick up a new skill, doing something that they normally have no time to do.

Their next break is many years later.

      Just my humble opinion.

DS1 finished O Level Chemistry Textbook (passed down from his cousin) during his P6 Dec holidays as he felt bored over the long break. Now, he has no issue with Chemistry at all. Hope to do the same for DS2.

DD is also preparing for some competitions, but have started commenting that she is feeling bored. Still hasn't start packing her room and clearing out stuff yet.

but she is requesting for a Sec 1 math text book to eyeball and try .... I am still procrastinating my trip to the bookshop ... :faint:
May I ask what competitions are that ? Thinking of keeping DS2 occupied as he has \"practically\" nothing to do these days and is getting bored. :snooze:

if the child is too free doing nothing till they start sec 1, they are in for a BIG culture shock. teachers/principal treat sec school students as YOUNG adults...so they have to responsible for their actions or else face consequences...no more spoon feeding. the culture is really different. fortunately son's CCA is on Fridays, so he can get homework done on Saturdays because he is so tired at the end of the day.

              MMM:
She told him that he can start with maths first as alot are build on primary knowledge. Anyway, he is going back for maths enrichment in 3 weeks time. His enrichment teacher told him that she will only give him 1 month break.

Was trying to get hold of his sec 1 literature so he can read up first but tough luck finding it. I recalled dd1 only had 2 days to finish reading her sec 1 literature before the teacher went through that. So that was like a mad rush for her. Alot of her peers have read the book previously.
different schools use different titles for literature. for son, his sec 1 title was 'sing to the dawn'.

son will be starting on sec 3 E math this sat...he enjoyed himself a for a few days, then started getting moody because he was worried about his results.

My Sec 1 dd is using Chinese cinderella. ds dsa\"ed\" so asking parents of his choice school what book they are using currently. Don't seem to be able to find it in popular. Besides the school, wondering where else I can buy it without having to get it online.

His 'potential' seniors? Some may want to let go after they finish exams

Some books only sold via Sch bookshop.

My girl is also feeling bored staying at home. Now she is spending most of her time reading her story books on top of her 3 times a week swim training. I have also asked her to complete the assesment books which she has not completed.

Her lifestyle remains the same, before PSLE, during PSLE, after PSLE. She continue to use her mobile phone, continue to go for sports competition and so on. The only difference is now there is no school homework for her so she becomes very free after school.

We ever told her that we do not wish to make any changes to her lifestyle just because of her exam. She has to learn to be responsible for her own stuff, plan her own time. In future, she would have to sit for O level, maybe A level and it’s unlikely for us to continue to restrict her from doing this and that forever.

My daughter has also told us that there is no need to send her for any tuition when she enters to Sec Sch as it’s going to be very busy with 7 to 8 subjects plus CCA. She would like to do on her own and if she feels that she has difficulties coping with her studies then she will request for tuition. She started having tuition in P5/P6, so hopefully she can handle her studies on her own when she starts her Sec 1 learning journey.

Maybe, we will get her to do some reading on Geog and History in November as these subjects are quite new to the primary school kids.

Not just history and geography, math too! Secondary school math is quite different from primary school. No more models or unitary method. Gotta abandon that. I got DD to do math before she started secondary 1.

Where did you send your dd for Maths lesson? My dd 'remind' me to teach her Sec 1 Maths after her psle....
