DD will draw without labelling the models and along the way get confused and end up with the wrong answer. I am quite hands off with her these days so not very sure what is her preferred method. Saw in her latest practise papers a mixture of models, algebra and unit method.
DS does not draw any model. He does not write anything in the space given, no scribblings, no workings, nothing except the answer. In the process of doing, he will stare into space, almost like he is day dreaming, while twirling his pencil or eraser, then suddenly, he will put the answer down. 8-9 times out of 10 the answer is correct. When I tried to get him to explain to me how he got the answer, I get confused.
So I leave him be. -

My girl was like that...trying to emulate the bro by not having any workings...but end up losing unnecessary marks. Working is a must coz I understand they will give method marks or something like that
Actually, if your kid can do most of the Math homework by themselves, doing well in PSLE is all about practice++ and drill++...being systematic, meticulous...no shortcuts!! -
DS is not systematic, not meticulous and constantly looking for shortcuts! Die!
I went into meltdown an hour ago when DS told me his results for English and Math. Just passed only. Did much better for his Math Paper 1 but failed Paper 2. I was on the verge of giving up cos it feels like we’re both wasting time and effort. After I calmed down, while he was having his shower, I gave myself a mental pep talk followed by giving him a pep talk.
He knows his target and what he has to do to achieve it. He can actually complete my sentences as I’m talking. That’s how often I’ve said them to him. Now, it’s time for action…I just fear (greatly) that he still can’t make it. There’s less than a year to go before PLSE and so much ground to recover. I worry that he’ll fail PSLE! -

Maybe l like to share how I encourage my kids. From their P1 until now (DS in P5, DD in P3) I use target and reward method. Give them a target, once reach I'll reward them something with reasonable cost. This is definitely not the best method but is a good encouragement. Something positive in school is their classmates always like to compete with each other. So within their class they're actually self motivated. Both are in the best class of their level so the kids there has the ego for achievement. For me, I try to accomodate them with good rest and game hours even sometimes got to be kang cheong for them before the exam. These are just my humble opinion. Maybe he's just low in self-belief when it comes to Math. How about going thru the SA2 paper and just focusing on those marks lost thru carelessness? Let him know that he can do it...just have to be more careful.DS is not systematic, not meticulous and constantly looking for shortcuts! Die!

Then from there, study the answers given in assessment books and try to understand how they arrived at the answers. If he can understand, then attempt those questions in 2~3 days' time. If can get 4 out of 5 correct, then practise another 5. If not, go back to try to understand the solution again. No choice, just have to make sure he gets the concept right before moving on to next topic. -

the stressful part about PSLE year itself is that new topics are still being taught and there is also revision to handle especially for Science (lower block). time is so tight during this period. if you count down the months, it's even worse :frustrated:

Do you think it might be better for him and for you if you get him a tutor. I stopped coaching DD Math when I found myself wanting to strangle her whenever she tunes out when she finds it too tough or she gives me work that is riddled with careless mistakes and shouts \"slipshod\". She's happy and I stay sane. -
my hubby prefers to be on the backend coaching rather than total hands-on for math. off topic…I was hoping he can coach son (sec 3 next year) for E math and outsource A math…but he dared not.
after outsourcing daughter for math, there is less tension at home. -

I also used the same method to motivate my kids when they were in Primary School. It only worked for my dd n she exceled.
Unfortunately, it didn't work on my ds. Any rewards be it big or small don't interest him at all. To this day, he is still unmotivated.
