NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)
-
for Year 1 cohort this year (2014) :
- how many boys & girls are there ?
- total : how many Year 1 classes (cohort : out of 170 students) ?
- how many pupils, per class ?
- for group project / presentation :-
pupils themselves choose who they want to be their team members, or subject Tr assign them automatically, into different groups ?
- how is tests / exam structure like ?
from Term 1 to 4 (Year 1 to Year 6) -
for each subject :
are test marks, from both Theory assessments plus Practical laboratory work done, being weighted (apportioned) towards the final year end, or dependent upon only one final exam, at year end ? -

I am not sure if you will get a reply. The overall grade is apportioned through assignments, tests etc. There is usually not a lot of weightage in the final exam paper as far as I can see.
But why bother, let the child develop along the way and find his/her interest. It’s not only about competition all the way unlike other schools.
The good thing about this school is that the environment does allow a lot of opportunities for your child.
Take a particular top boy school(not R), the emphasis is on a particular consortium for math acceleration.
It is important that the school provides everyone with a equal chance and opportunity to start with and develop. -
There are 6 Y1 classes in 2014 with approximately 25 students per class.
I know it does not add up to 170 but the school have made it clear to offer only to deserving candidates instead of being pressured to fill up the seats.
Students with the right attitude and passion for the subjects will find the curriculum enjoyable and enriching.
Some sources estimated there are 10-15% girls. Maybe those are for early years or for certain batches/class. Others say it is about 20%. There is no gender discrimination but perhaps generally language and arts can be said to be a preference for girls.
As for group work and projects, it really depends on the teacher. Some let the students choose their team-mates others simply assign the groups randomly. I also understand that the sitting arrangement in the labs are according to your child’s register number. -
Officially overall girl:boy = 2:5
As for test, lab, etc. Everything varies for different modules. Some doesn’t even have a final exam. -
at end of Year 1 (beginning of the journey) (Term 4) :
what kind of award(s), do NUS High offer ?
does she award :-
- High Achiever Award (Top 3 or Top 5, in each class of 25 pupils ? )
- Bilingual (Top in English + Chinese, of entire Year 1 cohort ? )
- Best in Mathematics (Top of Year 1 cohort)
- Best in Physics (Top of Year 1 cohort)
- Excellence in Chemistry (Top of Year 1 cohort)
- Excellence in Biology (Top of Year 1 cohort)
- Outstanding Character Values Award (to 3 pupils, per class ? )
- Outstanding Leadership Award ?
(in what kind of category ? )
- Greatest Improvement Award (in which area ) ?
any other type of award ?
How about, at end of Year 6 (final year) ?
are award(s) similar to Year 1 award, or different nature ?
before NUS High graduates enter National University of Singapore : allocated to different, various faculties of professional courses of study ? -
The awards are top in each of the subject: Maths, Physics…, English, Higher Chinese, Normal Chinese etc as well as Principal’s List - top 10.
There are loads of other recognition, CCA achievements, Leaders, even Class Reps.
But seriously, the point is not really about competing to get the book prizes from Year 1 to Year 6.
Every often, some students will excel in the earlier years, others will start to mature in the later years and overtake the early developers.
This is especially so when the year 5/6 curriculum is pitched at Uni module and becomes more research oriented.
But in general, there is greater recognition for those who excel in the olympiads especially maths, physics etc and SMPF. Of course, there are some who manage to clinch the book prizes in addition to olympiads. -

I take a while to ponder whether to reply or furnish you an (some) answers.
But you seems more like grilling and more like a interrogation session more than anything esle. I know which thread you are from and probably also guessing the reason why and what you are doing, despite being a grandmaster in here. NUSH is celebrating its 10 years nexy year. It is growing nicely as a school in many areas while it reputations and advantage as non-traditional \"O\"/\"A\" level is attracting many potential students (both girls and guys) see as a top notch environment (especially those science-biased students) to traditional 2 Rs. Also NUSH is less \"elitish\" as students are not \"classified\" as GEPs or mainstream. Every students is given the same opportunity and time to develop themselves.
As a parent, I am glad my DD joined the school . As a science-biased student, she is in much better position and in a better environment than if she has follow her fellow friends in another school. -

Perhaps the reason why no one bothered answering. -
phtthp has many queries on nus high. Perhaps he or she has a child who is keen to join nus high?

We are in the midst of choosing the school for Exchange Programme
Please, please please share your ( or child's) experiences. What are the factors that mattered to you? Is there some advise you wanna share - for the child, the parent?
All advise / experiences are welcome. :please:
I am trying to collate the list of all things to consider , which while it may differ in importance from person to person, hopefully covers most factors.
What we have brain stormed so far in no particular order
1. Travel dates (Is there a clash with any other commitment? )
2. Dates for playing the host.
3. Cost
4. Host Country/Language barriers/ food /weather
5. School - culture/ feel from the school website , opinion/feedback about the exchange students who have visited the previous years from that school ...
6. School - is it like one of the best Maths/Science school in the country?
The last one we are not even sure if it should play a role but we put it in.
:frustrated:
