A good number of former RGS girls are not married or late (>30) marriage. NYG don seem to have this fate.

How did u arrive at this conclusion?

I attended NYGH open house this year. During the principal’s talk, in Q&A session, a parent stood up and self-introduced as an old RGS girl. She asked Mdm Heng, the principal, to comment on the difference of the two schools. Mdm Heng set her view in mainly 3 points:

1.The secondary school period is the most crucial time for a person to master a second language. If a person misses this period, and only starts to learn the second language in later phase of her life, she may have to put in double effort and expect less result. For Nanyang, it incorporates the learning of the Chinese Language and culture into not only school’s curriculum, but also students’ daily activities. Regardless of a student’s ability with Chinese language at the entry point, as long as the student is willing to learn, Nanyang promises and guarantees that, by the end of the 4 years, she will have good command of the language.

        2. Nanyang believes that, at secondary school level, the students are still not very mature. Therefore, Nanyang insists on teachers’ guidance, supervision and support.

3.Nanyang emphasizes that a student is a member of a community. The achievement of a student is a result of not just her own hard work, but also the result of her parents, teachers, coaches and others who contribute to her success.

Personally, I feel that Nanyang girls are refined and graceful. RGS girls are natural and outspoken.

Thank you for sharing. My DD is joining NYGH next year and we are really proud of that. She is non-Chinese but no less confident in a Chinese environment. End of the day, it boils down to where you feel more comfortable.

me too. I am all for less hand-holding and more self-directed learning. as long as a decent grade in mother tongue is achieved, there isn't a need to spend so much time n energy on it as there are so many other fascinating subjects to explore.

err.... I believe many will beg to defer with late marriage.. stereotyping....????
I think Matrix0405 was trying to say some and not ALL RGS girls lah.

My husband being an RI alumni himself, said RI's 1st choice not RGS girls but NYGH usually have bfs in HC. Among his RI friends, mostly din marry RGS girls.

Maybe it's the school culture that NYGH girls more traditional due to the Chinese culture and RGS girls are more westernize+ambitious?

Having said that, sometimes he do wonder if his dds can join the Raffles Family :rahrah:

                      \"this fate\"?

nonsense la...many (better looking ones) married in their 20s to scholars who had bonds (i.e. got job security liao), to docs (housemen who envisage they won't hv much time to pak tok), to high achievers who were posted overseas (so must quickly ROM). Some teachers married young too, cos got job security upon graduation liao.

too much stereotyping and over generalisation
