Actually there is no need to think about how different a gifted kid is from the rest, its just a label based on tests. It’s just our moe way to allocate resources to develop a differentiated curriculum for "better" kids. No matter what, having a gep system (no matter how unjustified) still looks better than not having right, else the moe will be accused of not allocating resources to develop talents.

It isn’t really surprising if gep don’t top the cohorts. Their school environment mostly focus on enrichment & individual strengths, they don’t really care about being the top top (numbers wise its very hard and not worth the trouble, is there truly any drastic privilege given to the top score and someone with 1 less distinction in life?).

About china, anyone watched the news yesterday night? 400 parents vie to get a place in a prestigious kindergarten ("ming xiao"). Talk about kiasuparents, they exist in usa and china too!

      To hyperkiasu:
      I think i am neither a kid nor a parent…I am gonna be 21 soon…
IQ books are always useful for the kids, besides the useful brain workout they provide, sometimes in life they will have to take reasoning tests like during dsa, scholarship, job opportunities, etc

      The vocabulary should be tough.

Actually, anyone from any category has a chance of being weird person with low eq. I am quite sometimes you will met people you think with low eq and they are not gifted nor exceptionally gifted. It’s just that the size of the "gifted" or "exceptionally gifted" group is smaller (so makes the statistics look larger) and well they are just being more and easily targeted by the media. Most gifted children grow up very normally like everyone else, so there’s no need to worry if your kid is labelled gifted.

I am newbie 😄 Nice to meet all of you here. Below is selection test example but not sure whether authentic or not. ':?'

        http://www.aristocare-sg.com/prog_gep.html

Preview of the authentic 2009 GEP Screening and Selection Questions :

        1) There are some children in a group. If each child gets 5 sweets, there will be 35 sweets left. If each child gets 6 sweets, there will be no sweets left. How many children are there?

        Ans: 35 children

        2) There are 7 cards that are numbered: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The sum of 2 cards made by Alex is 9, 11 and 12. No cards can be repeated. Which card is not taken?

        Ans: 3

        3) There are some marbles in Box A and Box B. After 9 marbles and 6 marbles are placed in Box A and Box B respectively, A has 11 marbles more than B. Find the difference in marbles between A and B at first. Ans: 8 marbles

        4) 1 cat can catch 2 mice in 3 days. How many cats are needed to catch 100 mice in 30 days?

        Ans: 5 cats

        5) A and B started at the same point and walked in opposite direction. For every 20 m A walked, B walked 12 m. If A walked 1 km, what was the total distance between them?

        Ans: 1600 m
Thought the selection test suppose to be confidential to ensure fairness or accurracy of the selection result? How could the questions be made know and used to make money? GEP branch don't bother :? :?

Agree with you IQ books good to stimulate brain development.
Prestigious schools are always hot everywhere, but China dun have PSLE let alone GEP 😛

Did u see the top scorers' for this year's A levels?

GEPers did not top the cohort!
Is this another cause for concern?
Recently heard of a GEP student we know who went from TNS to Nanyang Girls and heard she had to redo her \"O\"s..... So it doesn't mean that GEP guarantees the child's future success. It's still the attitude that matters most.

in MOE's eyes, this failure is a highly exceptional case only...

How come NYGH has got to do 'O' level? thought they are IP?

Similiarly, it could happen to any top PSLE students who choose to slack in their sec sch years.

just met the principal of an IP sec school over the weekend : the message to parents is this : the kids will be transferred to do 'O' level if they are not consistent in their work from sec 1 to sec 3, at least they will have 'O' level if they don't do 'well enough' to cope with through train to 'A' level, or at least the transfer will wake him up from his / her playful ways in the sec school

GEP is no guarantee for one's success but at least opportunities are there if the kids know how to grab it, capitalise on the resources poured unto them to do well, and hopefully they will repay society through the various channels

only the top students from NYGH go to Hwa Chong in IP train, not every one qualifies
