He is very bad with MT so bad even the sell sugarcane auntie laughed at him and said \"you cannot speak mandarin at all ah?\" And totally agreed language is more difficult to improve compare to science and maths especially I sensed my DS \"shut down\" everything related to chinese
there was a promoter who made a comment to daughter, saying 华人不会华语‘。 I had to ask her, '你需要对一个小孩子这样讲话吗?' what's with these people? bloody tactless.

Seems like its so common nowadays that parents commented their kids are weak in Chinese, my DD1 is also weakest in Chinese compared with other subjects. Still can pass but not fantastic results. I have started to encourage her instead of \"acknowledging\" her weakness in Chinese. If her mindset is she is weak in this subject, she will have a \"give up\" mentality. So I keep telling her she is improving, which makes her wanna keep doing it better.

So I suggest parents to 假装不知道 but at the same time keep introducing Chinese into their daily life, speak more, see more, they will 不知不觉 improve... 😉

most kids are speaking English at home now…mandarin is a language too…less usage means less ability to grasp it. but in Singapore, English is also mixed with singlish and other dialects.

we are speaking more English but writing a decent composition is a problem. my daughter can rattle off easily but when it comes to writing a composition, she faces a mental block. for 作文,with some memorizing of 开头 and 结尾, massaging in the rest is less complicated compared to a composition.

My Mandarin is SUPER CANNOT MAKE IT as quoted by my kids. My friends n colleagues also asked why I cant speak Mandarin.

I said - I gave it all back to the school.

i have a problem with mandarin too. before, I could still converse a little…but after daughter’s exemption, I can only manage 3/4+++ English and wee little in mandarin.

I know it is easier said than done. But if the parents have given up on Chinese, what kind of message are we sending to our kids? Our actions will only tell our kids that they could give up on Chinese too.

On the other hand, if we attempt to learn Chinese together with our kids, show our kids how to persevere, our kids will be more motivated to learn Chinese. The same applies to other subjects too.

Please don’t flame me as I have said this is easier said than done. As parents, if we do not want our kids to give up so easily, then we should not give up first. 🙂

                      Hi all,

Signing in too as DS1 taking PSLE in 2017. DS1 SA2 compo got a D … Faint… Couldn’t complete writing the 4 pictures. Only did 2.5-3 pictures. A big gap to work on for the next 3 years
