Hi, I would like to find out if anyone here has experience in DSA into AHS through badminton? What is the process? Difficult to get selected with mediocre results?

No direct experience. But I recalled asking the school during their talks in kids' school if there are any minimum results (note that some schools in the same cop range stipulate that) that the child must attain in P5 and P6 in order to try for dsa, they said no but it's purely based on their sporting talent. In the case of sports, I suppose the measurements are clear given those competition.

But I personally feel that the general rule of thumb is at least 70% overall. Anything lower than 65% might mean that the child might not even qualify for express stream.

But an important consideration is that it is important to survive well in the sec school rather than try to get into it. If academically challenging, this might be even more challenging if the child gets into AHS as they might end up having alot of catch up versus their peers and in addition, they have dsa commitment. So do have these considerations. Surviving well is more important than getting in.

Yes I truely agreed on that - surviving well is more important than getting into it.

Just to clarify, there is only express stream in AHS, no normal stream. They transfer students out if student fail Eng or retain if overall fail too. For Sec 3 this yr, (just to share) there are 6 retained, and all came from the combine sci class which consists of many DSA sports students. My guess is that too much time is spent on training, and perhaps all these training may hv drained the child by the end of the day.

This is not to scare you off from trying DSA, but it is just facts that is happening in all schools. So students must know how to balance their sport and academic.

          Hi,

I'm an AHS graduating student who took HMT. I took normal CL in primary school. I'm half Chinese and come from a 100% English-speaking home. couldn't formulate proper sentences in sec 1. Struggled to complete my zuowen homework every time, needed classmates to help me translate my English ideas into Chinese.

My opinion is that so long as the student is humble and hardworking, willing to do as teachers instruct, there will be improvement. About zhongguo lishi books, you don't need to read them to pass šŸ™‚ There are also very interesting modern Chinese novels which AHS orders for us to read during the hols. The latter helped me appreciate the Chinese Language much more and now I have no problems talking in Chinese or completing my zuowen.

          Hope this helps.
Just what I need to put my mind at ease!

My DD is also half chinese but her mum (me) has pretty limited mandarin skills. My DD took HCL in primary school and actually got a merit! I tell her if she can pass, its ok! šŸ˜‚ She qualifies for AHS but I was really concern about the Mandarin standard and whether she can cope. After my visitation to the school and your sharing, I feel better and if she wants to put that as first choice, I will support her.

Thanks for sharing your experience šŸ˜„

If I remember correctly, the VP told me AHS has no contracted school bus service, parents have to make their own school bus pick up arrangement.

Hi all, i would like to enquire the following on AHS. Can any AHS mummy advise me, tks in advance.

                1. How many sets/types of uniform are there in AHS that i have to buy? I have seen some students in t-shirt, polo shirts, normal cotton shirts etc.
                2. What are the types of textbooks AHS is using for Sec 1 Sci, Geography, History, Maths, Eng, Lit?
                3. Do AHS teachers give out many notes on the subjects? Or it is advisable to buy guide
books for the above mentioned subjects in pt.2. Some of my friends said that teachers will give lot of notes and its not nec to buy guide books but some other friends advised oherwise.

                    Hi,
There is basically only 2 types for a start. Full white uniform and PE set. What you see others are student council T, class T, CCA T, which will be advised much later.

As for textbooks, follow the booklist. If you are buying 2nd hand bks, look out for the edition, as some bk are new editions.

I didn't buy guide bk for sec 1 and 2, except the chinese 'chi-yu shou che' as the teacher will provide some notes during lesson.

                        U r welcome šŸ˜„
Is your child Sec 1 next yr at AHS ?
FYI, text books at popular is slightly cheaper than the bookshop at AHS, other than Literature book. šŸ˜‚ šŸ˜‚

And to add on, school will have their own guide book (photocopy) you can buy from the bookshop (most of it should be on the booklist. If not, when school starts, teacher will give you another list to buy)
