I am not a teacher but based on my personal belief, learning of grammar is very important n foundation shld be set at Primary School level. Unfortunately, current day teaching by schools does not focus on grammar, which is very sad becos a good essay is often marred by poor tenses.

I think its still not too late in Sec School to try to brush up on grammar. This is good even when you go out to the working world - good communications is very important n honestly, a lot of working adults are not been able to express themselves becos they didn’t work hard on their English during school days.

To kids taking O-levels/parents of kids taking O-levels!

English is an important subject, especially because it's used as the L1 for most students. I'm selling the following resources which you may find very useful in your preparations. 🙂

            - Present Perfect / Broader Perspective Magazines - years 2009-2012 [*excellent resource]
            - SAP O level English model compositions
            - Model Compositions (Global Publishers)
            - O level Distinction in English - Vocabulary
            - Assorted materials (e.g. notes, news articles, logsheets) that help in Situational Writing, Essays and Oral.

These resources helped me to ace my Os, and I hope they can help others to do well too!
Resources for lower secondary and IB also available.

PM FOR MORE DETAILS OR REQUESTS! 🙂

              BlessDaddy:
What are the resources ? As my kid also have difficulties in Eng ! He can speak fairly well, however, he do not know how to phrase his sentences properly, including all the grammar mistakes, weak vocabulary as well. Any idea how I can help him ?

              Thanks
Hi BlessDaddy, are you inquiring about the lower sec resources? Or my listed resources?

Cliched but reading helps! Besides novels and young adult fiction, reading magazines will also help. Likewise, the assessment/guide books I listed above are also very useful, as well as Present Perfect magazines. Those magazines are tailored for secondary school syllabus, thus are an incredibly effective resource for English.

The vocab book I listed above can help to boost your child's vocabulary knowledge, and I also have SAT grammar notes (it goes back to the basics) which may fix your child's misconceptions.

PM me if you have any other queries. 🙂

Oral is often neglected in schools which is a shame, especially since its weightage is 20%. Most think oral comes naturally, but in fact, there is a skill to it, and practice helps of course.
I use \"O Level English Oral Communication Yearly Edition\" (SAP Education) with my O-Levels students. Available at Popular.

Tense is the most fundamental element of the English Grammar, and its foundation should have been laid by Primary 4. Unfortunately in my years of experience, teachers in school hardly pay much attention to this aspect, resulting in most of my students (even Secondary ones) being very clueless. Most of them go with one tense rather than another simply because \"it sounds better\".
To answer your question, your can start with the various types of tenses...
                  Present
                  Past
                  Continuous
                  Participles
                  Future

Subject-Verb Agreement is another important aspect of Grammar that most students tend to be weak at.

                  Hope this helps.

Hi, I need some help with planning my Expository essay. The question given is: How, and in what areas, can Singapore do better in the next 10 years?

My understanding of this question is that I am purposed to write arguments about different aspects (economy and social, for example) that Singapore can and will be able to improve in the next ten years time. That will mean that my counter argument&rebuttal paragraph will be talking about what Singapore will not be able to improve in the next ten years (that means that the problem could not be solve in ten years time with reasons such as it will take a longer time, etc) and rebut with reasons like improvements are made more rapidly in shorter period of time and thus may be able to improve in ten years time.

Or should it be arguments about areas to improve and counter argument about what should not be improved and rebut about how a country should improve as the rest of the world will improve. This one is strange so I dont really think so…

Or is there other ways to interpret this question? Thank you!

Based on the question alone, I don't see a need to come up with any counter-argument. This is only required IF the question is \"Can Singapore do better in the next ten years?\".
So, you simply need to focus and answer \"how\" and \"in what ways\" Singapore can improve.
Rather than using counter-arguments or rebuttals, it'd be more appropriate to highlight any realistic limitations to the suggestions you bring up.
                        Hope this helps.
And please don't forget your solid introduction and food-for-thought conclusion.
                        All the best!
