Going forward, depend on the direction and focus of what the Raffles family (RI + RGS) have set.Hopefully Rgs and ri will take the same intake as this year 400. As result, more students will get into these schools. I heard some top school's principle intend to reduce their intake as they think they need to
Maintain the quality of the school.
I hope the intake of those schools don't reduce so that more students can study there. (2003 450 reduce to 2014 400), there is more than 10% reduce. May be there are more no to reduce if the cop is dropping.
If due to changes in subject syllabus getting harder & COP in general keep dropping, or the Top man want to maintain \"Every school is a good school\" and if the Raffles family want to maintain high standard & quality (so that COP does not fluctuate too much) Yes, Raffles may control by reducing her Secondary 1 intake.
It depend on what vision, direction each IP school set.
Some IP schools want quality, they may not compromise on quality, while other IP schools do not mind giving chance to students, who wish to study IP.
Regardless of which IP school students go to, at the end of 6 years, they will meet at the common A level exam (apart from the few IB schools) -

This is hearsay… The selection of students to top faculties and scholarships will eventually be from a bigger pool of schools; not just the concentration from the 2 more popular families of schools. The top students of more schools will be selected. This way will make more schools good schools as it’ll be filtered down. It is also the government’s intention not to have students from the same mould.

Imagine if this hearsay is indeed true, the top top students will choose the lesser-sought after ip schools to max their chance of topping the schools. Then it’ll filter down to the non-ip schools and the gap will eventually be closed. It may actually happen sooner than anyone expects as the top man seems to want to make his "every school a good school" works.

I understand moe wants to broaden the criteria for scholarships. In the past, it has been primarily academic success but now more "holistic".

This is very true. Its even more difficult to qualify for scholarships. -
It is not hearsay. It is true. When I brought my elder girl to Rgs first day in 2003, I saw the intake of that year was 450 plus. Now I saw the Rgs intake only 400, half for dsa, s1 posting is only 200. It is difficult to get in. Rgs wants to maintain its standard. Every parents is interested in cop of school, nobody to compare the intake no actually reduced now. That is the trend in the future.

Could it be due to smaller cohort over the decade which resulted in a smaller intake over the past 10 yrs? The % drop in intake (from yr 2003 to 2014) is similar to that for cohort size.
Year 2002: Total of 53,149 sat for PSLE
Year 2003: Total of 51,327 sat for PSLE
......
Year 2013: Total of 43,047 sat for PSLE
Year 2014: Total of 42,332 sat for PSLE -
