Thank you for the explanation.
How stringent is hci 's cca selection? If child has interest yet no prior experience, can he opt? For example, keen to learn basketball but never played before? So next week is cca trial week?
On average, may I ask what time do the boys end their days? Cca days and non cca days. -
In general, sports in HCI is not for leisure but to win medals. Those school players will be in. The rest have to go for trials. A few may get selected. Those with no sports background will usually end up in uniformed groups or clubs. My DS was in such a category. All his choices in sports were rejected because he did not impressed during the trials. He was upset of course. He got posted to unifrom group. But on hindsight, it was good for him. He is physically tougher and very tan now, well prepared for NS from the drills, pyhysical fitness tests, shooting etc.
Its hard to tell u what time they come home. It depends on what they join or study. As a guide, he is home around 8 pm on CCA days. If he gets to assume leadership roles or take part in national competitons, 11 pm is possible. This was why I mentioned earlier not to be too "greedy" in that everything u also want. One CCA is fine, two will be a stretch, three may "kill" him. Because HCI boys want to win at all national competitions. So even in uniformed groups, they train really really hard to try to win gold. Donโt forget he has to study and rest. Just sharing what I saw in some parents previously and count myself lucky I am not that poor child. Let nature take its course is best. Just support and cheer them on is what I would do. -
There is one way to fulfill his wish if he is not selected. What my DS did was he organized regular weekend session with his peers for badminton, just for leisure. Importantly, they built camaraderie, teamwork, leadership skills. I stayed at the sideline and watch in awe what the boys can do on their own as long as they are happy and have a good time.

there will be a CCA trial selection period in mid Jan - that will last about 1-2 weeks, with all the CCAs having trial slots so the boys can try out any cca, but as IPparent pointed out, the sports CCAS are all competitive, so usually those who have experience will get chosen, although there are some CCAS where you have a shot at even if you have no experience as pri schs may not have such cca - eg. Canoeing, Judo, Fencing. But the teachers will select based on your โtalentโ, and i believe there is no recreational team for these sports either.
As for average going home time - if nothing to stay back for, they are dismissed at 130 pm. CCAs usually end officially at 530-630 pm. Of course, there are many days the boys will stay back for class comm meeting, discussions, projects, hang around, etc.
hope that helps!! -

did you son enjoy orientation? Rest well today, in preparation for the new school term on Monday! So exciting!

thinking mum:
What's consortium? Is it equivalent to just houses in other schools? Excluding isparks. Do they have consortium tshirt? Any difference in consortium curriculum besides isparks?
Yes, it;s a bit like 'house' system. They will explain more during the Principal's talk which should take place sometime in January I think. They have consortium Tshirt, but it is not compulsory to purchase. They can wear it on Fridays, when they dress down (can wear PE shirt, CCA shirt, camp tshirt etc).
No difference in curriculum (other than iSpark) but the teachers teach within a consortium. -

My son is in HCI Sec one this year. I send him to school before going to work. The traffic at gate 4 was very heavy today. Is there only one more entrance at Gate 3? Howโs the situation there? Thanks.
