Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary

my P1 son was like this too. we told him it is not a matter of choice. everyone has to go through it so that we can earn a living. now he has learnt to accept it..Can I ask the old bird parents here. Is 3 months long for a kid to adapt to primary 1 or do they take longer than that? It seems mine is having some difficulty coping with the academic work. At times she confesses that she disliked studying. Other than that she is fine socially.
I hate to get alarmed prematurely. But I don't wish to ignore the signs too. Any advice?

yes, school holiday ended. Need to get back to work on SA1 now. Thinking about it makes me moody and stress... worse than my own work in office!Dear ladies,
1 week holiday has almost ended...back to routine and preparation for SA1 soon.
chowchow,
I hope you have read the answers to your queries, as able to make a decision regarding the school to register your child. -

School anxiety or academics or both? Need to know the root. Some need more time to adapt, some less. Pei Hwa does not give the kids much time to adapt so on our part, we have to help them to be ready as soon as possible. PH not offering CA1 in first term for P1 is probably the school's way of lettting the children cope with P1. Some schools do not even have any exams for the whole of P1. We have to know the school's culture and help our kids cope with its system. PH's students are academically challenged so we cannot let them swim on their own at P1/P2. It's harsh but that's reality: Our kids are forced to grow up quickly (if they are sensible) in PH.Can I ask the old bird parents here. Since your girl can express her concerns means she is mature and feeling the pressure which could also mean she can be motivated given the right means so stay hopeful.
Some kids can't even be bothered and not feel anything at all at P1. To each his own. Find out her real concerns and address it.
When my dd was in P1, she had school anxiety for almost a month because school hours were longer and it was her first time taking the school bus. We are staying rather far so school bus comes early. She had no problems after she reached school and have many friends. I wrote little notes of advice on her school work and encouraging notes about primary schooling to her everyday and put them into her lunchbox. She read them during recesses and understood the joy of attending primary school. Following my advice, she was more careful in her work and when she did well, she was more motivated to do better. After her anxiety disappeared, I continued to encourage her with the notes for the whole of term 1 and term 2, even her classmates read her notes and were encouraged. With positive thinking, she was ready and in top-form for her exams by then and subsequently did very well for both exams. This is just my two cents' worth. It's really up to you how much you want to control or let go for your girl. -

Be proactive. Easier said than done for working mothers but if you see progress in your child, your stress will also disappear. I know three working mums who will plan a list of work for their girls and will check them when they come home. All their P2 girls doing very well in three different schools.

The reason why I am anxious is because of the upcoming SA1 and she is still careless in her work and her spelling is still not strong. It was only upon my questioning her that she said she was afraid of studies and going to school (real sad to see her sometimes breaking up when doing revision). It seems that she is also facing some peer pressure to do well - she is pretty competitive and hates to lose, see?
On the contrary, she does not hate to go to school. She's pretty eager in fact. My concern right now is her short concentration span that is doing the most 'damage'. So now I am improving her concentration by letting her try out some adventure sports.
But still, if you are not interested in something, will you do as well? That's the major hurdle I am facing now. -

She is still young.
My now P3 went through two tough periods in P1. He was very meticulous in his penmanship and would spend lots of time just writing a letter/number/character. Penmanship activities left him in tears and sobs all the time. Now he rushes through with untidy handwriting.
He likes to learn, but does not do well in exams due to careless mistakes. Hurdle?
Today he brou back EL worksheets. To my horror, the teacher spoon fed the ans. He does not know why she did this. He ended up not practising the tactics the P2 EL teacher taught. Even for the connectors qns, she told them the ans. How to learn like this? I feel the hurdle is more what type of teacher the child gets.
If your child does not like to going to sch, check what's the teacher been doing in class. JMHO -
I couldn't agree more...children in Pei Hwa are really forced to mature like what E3 mentioned. There is no CA1 for P1 in PH...to allow children to adjust from kindergarten. But come P2, CA1 will be 'thrown in'. It's a harsh reality in this school.
Next week is the last week of March...that means I have to plan revision timetable for SA1.
I have to plan revision time-table 3x a year and it's so stressful, next year I have to do it for 2 kids.
Buckbrick,
My son in P4 hates studying too, esp when there is CL and English dictation/spelling but we remind him that it's his responsibility as a student (of course we didnt tell him it was not as tough then). His school homework is 1st priority. -
Any recommendation for maths assessment books that feature "creative/IQ" questions for P1 students to try?
Thanks -
I agree that its v difficult to correct carelessness. I just had a conversation with her on her careless mistakes on her maths questions. And her reply was, its human to make careless mistakes.... aiya... i dont know how to retort. But I encouraged her, saying, for the p4 std, there are people who achieved 100 full marks for Ca1, so I encouraged her to challenge herself. The only competitor is herself, she has to try to compete against herself to not make careless mistakes. No answer from her....
Janet, I agree on the horrible thot of setting revision timetable in prep for SA1. Anyway, I am quite frustrated with myself. I don't know how to set revision for her now as it seems like the hours are just not sufficient to do assessments! Unless, I really take out her weekend fun and leisure time which I am VERY reluctant on doing.
Mummies, any idea or revision strategies to share? How many hours do you set aside for the kids to do daily revision, and then homework, followed by assessment? With 4 subjects, time is really not sufficient, esp when PeiHwa's school hours are so long. By the time she arrives at he doorstep, its already 2pm.

For my P1 dd, I fully agree with Jennifer that she is still young. I am trying to balance schoolwork and play. I have already established the fact that kids this age can't really grasp the idea of responsibility as play was their main focus up till now; so on this note, I'm just going to concentrate on building her foundation and see how she performs for sa1 before I stress myself further.
Oh E3, the encouragement notes is a great idea! I feel we sg parents neglect that when it comes to their school work- hence our and their stress?
