2015 PSLE Discussion and Strategies
-
From what I see of DD’s supp class last year, the teacher covers more challenging questions. I am not sure what her CL supp class will cover. I have a feeling the teachers may use the supp classes to complete the syllabus and thereafter they will use the rest of the time for exam prep which means past year exam papers and drilling.
In any case, her supp class is only 1 hour so I think it is still quite ok. CCA will stop before SA1. For me, as much as I think it is important for the kids to work hard for PSLE, I do not believe that every other activity should stop. I am glad that there is still CCA and tournaments for DD to train for as it is a reprieve from all the books and worksheets and talks about PSLE. -
Agree not putting living-a-life on hold just for PSLE. My DDs seem to have similar stress busters like I do - baking. So, we bake when there is time to spare, apart from the usual outdoor play.

My dc sch supp class is to complete syllabus, do worksheets etc
It is strongly encouraged by teachers, else child has to bring back all hw assigned during supp class .
Also ,Supp classes are used to make up for lost lessons time during term time (eg sch events, festive celebrations, public holidays etc )
So seem like my dc has to attend, for all P5 &6
3 times a week

good morning to all,
I find that my daughter is utterly exhausted after the supplementary classes. i personally would prefer if the school would excuse her from supplementary lessons. 1-1 tuition is way better and zooms in on her weaker areas. she would have come home, had lunch and adequate rest before tuition. Hence she would be more alert during tuition. -

The kids I am referring to are not weak. A and A* students. Main focus is challenging questions.
At this point in time, I think the main focus of supp classes would be to revisit those P3~5 stuff...so should be quite beneficial for the weaker kids.TheAnswer:
Some of my students skip their supplementary class to attend tuition. I hope they made the right choice. -

Environment plays a part.Hi TA,
I am in favor of students skipping supplementary lessons and attending tuition instead. Tuition is customized to students' weakness. Rather than attending supplementary which is 'mass market', why not small group or better still, 1-1 lessons? Tuition is in a more comfortable environment compared to hot and stuffy classroom after a long day. -
TheAnswer:
First it really depends on what the teacher is covering during the sup class. If it's for topics that the child is already good at, then no point wasting the time there. And if the teacher is going to just hand out worksheets for the kids to do, then might as well bring it home and do.

As for tuition, I would assume it is more for the current syllabus. So if the school is to cover previous years' syllabus, then it makes sense for weaker kids to attend the schools' revision, while the tutor covers the current stuff. -
It depends on the teachers and the kids.
If the teacher is covering more advance topics in supp classes like DD’s teacher did for math last year, weaker kids will be totally lost. As it is, standard stuff already they have issues processing how to benefit from a supp class covering more challenging stuff. So these kids will be better off skipping the supp class and going for 1-1 tuition.
If the teacher is covering the same stuff more slowly to help weaker children catch up. Then more capable kids will be wasting time in these classes and again they will benefit more if they skip this and go for their enrichment classes covering more challenging stuff.
If the teacher is just handing out worksheets, this should only be attended by kids who do not have tuition or supervision at home, at least they are doing something with their time instead of not doing anything.
So find out what is done in your kids school for supp classes, gauge for yourself where your kid stands and decide. Do not base your decision on other people’s experiences. -
Good point! I’ll check with DS after couple of lessons and probably e-mail his teachers too.

School’s supplementary class is usually to cover syllabus, whereas remedial class is to help the weaker students who need extra help. Parents may check with the teachers accordingly. If the school teachers take their time to hold supplementary classes, why not attend?
If your concern is the child is staying back in school, isn’t it time to train them now? Afterall, when they go Sec 1, most likely they will need to stay in school for longer hours and more days to stay back too.
P6 is the time to train the kids about time management, to grow up, to be responsible for their own results. All the best to P6 kids!
