I assume supplementary lessons are compulsory while remedial are for the weaker students.

On paper, supplementary lessons are compulsory.

Remedial lessons are even more compulsory.

There has to be official letter from parents to inform the school should you wish to remove your child from supplementary lessons. Yes, has to be valid reason and must be prepared to have tea in Principal's office. They will also review your child's progress to date. Subject teachers will be called in to offer their assessment of child too.

Remedial participants are selectively chosen. These children have been observed to require additional help.

In both cases, school will not know the schedule of every child and their study routines after school. Neither will the school know if the children have/attend external tuition classes after school unless it was shared with the school/teachers or if the children were required to declare to the school/teacher of their external engagements. Hence, these extra sessions - both supplementary and remedial, are arranged to cater to all students in general. This way, should the children not have external help or adult supervision after school, these classes will still be beneficial to them rather than none at all.

The above sharing is based on observation from DDs' school and in no way speaking for all other schools in general - but as usual must add this important liner. All sg schools are good schools.

Supplementary lessons for DDs' school starts at P3. We were informed that it was to build up momentum for the demands and rigour of upper primary syllabus and schedule.

During DD1's P3 and P4 supplementary classes, they were REALLY supplementary classes.

For English, the teacher covered creative writing techniques, in bite-sized portions weekly. WE (DD1 and I) loved it! Teacher wrote to us to anticipate that our children will be required to carry out a lot of writing. Nearing exam period, teacher will squeeze in oral practice and listening compre. The children will also have group projects, to come up with fun language games for their peers to try out during English week carnival. Booths or tables will be set up during recess for a week.

For Math, the wonderful teacher will cover current Math topics using creative games during supplementary to reinforce topic content. There will be worksheets to be done, personally prepared by him or external resources in his collection. Similarly for Math supplementary, there will be Math carnival as well and children will be in groups to showcase their Math games during recess.

For Science, teacher will cover experiments once or twice a month and other times, there will be quizzes in the form of class games to test their ability to answer in keywords - according to dd, it was conducted like a game show. There will be worksheets to be done to reflect what was covered during supplementary sessions, but no homework.

For Mother Tongue, it was close to what was covered for English. Students take turns to put up short drama skits to encourage use of language and expression, apart from (the rest) what was shared earlier for English supplementary sessions.

All these teachers have either transferred out or resigned / left the service. These are teachers who reel in children effortlessly to love the subject enough, to get them to want to learn more.

In my personal opinion, these are what supplementary sessions are meant to be - to supplement. To enrich children's minds beyond academics via supplementary activities and resources.

        They are greatly missed.

Supplementary lessons since then, became extra lessons - extension of class lessons. Very tiring indeed, for our children's brains are fried with approximately more than 6 hrs of 'learning'... on a daily basis. It was worse, when even PE days were not spared. When that happened, I intervened. I questioned the effectiveness of removing PE (which ain't that many periods) to cover curriculum time.

No. Our children cannot go through school days just sitting down for lessons or moving around only to change classes for other subjects.
Aiyoh buds what you doing so late at night? Or should i say early morning :slapshead: go sleep.

Agree about taking over PE . The kids need to run around and play. I even suggested at a breakfast talk with principal to have PE every day, and he just patronized me . 😢

The work load in school 2-3 weeks b4 semester exams is bad . I have learnt to go easy with DS . It is hard to allocate work beforehand when i dont know what will be done in school, what homework will be given. Came home some days to find DS zombified. He would grumble that he did a MT paper, an eng compo besides the routine stuff. Then he came home to do the Maths paper I set. So since last year, we mostly just let him do home work, revise a little, go thru stuff done in school. Oh yes , we also go for jogs, and do some yoga.
DS school only had remedial class in P5. Looks like every school has its own way of administering supplementary class.

I think So (the part in red). Tofu boy's school has announced that supp class will begin in t2 from p1 onwards. The time table is also out. At the moment, it's just \"who\" (will be attending).

Supp class for P1....your school very the ONZ!!
Abuthen 😉

              To clarify,

Supp class for p1 to p4 starts in t2. There is a start date given, timing and frequency have been indicated too.

Supp class for p5 and p6 start next week.

My dc sch compulsory supp/ remedial class is in P4 (twice weekly) P5 , P6 (thrice weekly). I agree it is very tiring and I cannot give doc more home revision too

Items covered can be extension of curriculum lessons , newspaper review,
Or working thru assessment which sch ask the students to buy.

Dc sch actually band the students according to each subject grade, Eg a child in 6A may attend Math in 6.2 . Thus the disparity in maths for students in class is smaller n kids can progress along similar pace. Even the assessment bk also diff for diff classes to suit ability of kids

P1 to P3 are by special invitations only for weaker students .

Do supplementary lessons start at P5 or P6?

I asked in my ds's sch thread before but there was no reply.

With 2 CCAs, I worry that ds may have to stay back in school often.

supplementary lessons start at primary 5.

In our school, supple starts from P3.

Thanks buds. Sad to hear the better teachers have left your dd’s sch.

It’s really the luck of the draw, what kind of teachers our kids end up with.

So far ds’ luck has been holding up … but it won’t last forever.
