I hear that tests in year1 n year3 affect the offering of higher modules

Which affect the option of study in year5/6
Those who got thro the tests including winners in year1
Will be offer higher modules in year2/3 ( not sure abt it)
As for marks the average marks in nush is 4/5 quoted by a teacher
Those who r offer honours r being identify during the earlier years by the school
Done by the gifted n talent branch ( moe) in the school

DS1 is doing acceleration for Chemistry now. Does this helps ?

For now my ds let nature take his future just follow
What i want to know is this
In year3 what r the correct elective to select if he wants to study in u
He havent decide what he wants now but will think abt it in a few years time
Its time for me to chart n plan his route guide for the future
Pls advise :thankyou:

What is the chances for Math and triple Sciences with consistent A+ throughout Y1-Y4, CAP of 4.8-4.9 and Olympiads but not winners ? Still have to take diagnostic tests for these 4 modules ? Where can we find out what are the essential Electives to take ? Don't think there's any available time slots if one is taking all olympiads as Electives.

I can only share with you my DS experience. DS is in Y5 this year and doing 2 honours, Maths & Physics. To be eligible for Maths honours, you need to do a prerequisite elective, PPV, in Y4. There is no prerequisite modules for the other subjects. Despite not taking part in any Science related Olympiads, DS was selected to do Honours for Chemistry and Physics without taking any diagnostic test for these 2 subjects. He eventually dropped Chemistry Honours after talking to some seniors about workload in Y5-6. DS had consistently scored A+ or A (there were occasional A-) for both Chemistry and Physics throughout his first 4 years. I believe the minimum qualification to do Science Honours is to score at least 4.5 consistently in Y3 and Y4. Hope this helps.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. DS1 is in Y4 this year but there's no mention of the pre - requisites for Math honours so far and DS1 had already selected Chemistry and Physics Olympiads as his Electives. He's keen to take Biology Olympiad next year too. Is it too late to change to PPV module since it's a prerequisite for Math honours ? Thanks !
It is not too late, PPV is offered in Sem 2. However, PPV is a quite challenging module, last year, some dropped out after a few lessons. If your DS wants to do this module, it is advisable for him to plan his workload accordingly in Sem 2.
last year PPV examination was also a shocker. Some 75 students took and was told there were failures in this exam. Those not doing too well overall were not allowed to do the Maths Honours program despite their A grade in Maths core. DD did well in PPV to qualify but choose to opt out of Maths honours as she is already loaded wih triple science honours.

Most students still have to sit for further diagnostic test in order to be selected for that respective science honours programme. So it is actually a case by case basis.

Those who have scored A+ and A consistently (from Y1-Y4 and are Olympiad winners) naturally are spared this diagnostic tests.

For Maths Honours, you need consistently A+ (or A at least) from Y1-Y4 and need to scored A for essential Y4 Maths Elective (Polar Co-ordinates , Parametric Equations and Vector Functions, PPV) to qualify for Maths Honours. Student need PPV module as a prerequisite to qualify for the Maths Honours programme.

For Computing Science Honours, you need to do CS Elective for Y3 and Y4 , and must done well enough to be invited to do CS Honours. CS Honours student are required to read a no of modules at NUS Computing school.

I think those with high CAP consistently in Maths and Science (> 4.8 CAP even without Olympiad medals) are considered for Honours program. My DD is doing 3 Science honors. Last December some students opting for Physics honours were told to do the diagnostic test.
I read that Physics diagnostic tests are currently being carried out Y5/Y6 physics honours in last 2 weeks. Eventually, some students may drop out of honours and just do a major if the workload is beyond them.

AS far as I know there is no mention about Chemistry or Biology Honours diagnostic test.
:thankyou:

May I know usually when is NUSH open house ?

Also, I'm just wondering, since NUSH is for those good in maths and science, does it also mean that quite a fair bit of students end up in NUS medicine course eventually as they are 'stronger' in triple science results?

Anyone can share how many went medicine per year roughly? Thanks.

Though I wonder why many people are allured by Medicine course (and for that matter, Law course too), well, for class of 2013, 9 went NUS medicine & 4 went NTU medicine. Do you need to know the 2013 cohort size too? Well, it was about 200. Seriously, the numbers themselves have no meaning.

So he has gone through 2 rounds of acceleration tests for Math as of now ? Then chances of acceleration should be very high. Did you received any reply from teacher in charge ?
